ELD 1 (Entering)

May

Welcome to English Language Development class Level 1!

In this class, we learn the academic skills expected across all classes - vocabulary and sentences to describe or explain or compare characters or science experiments or historical periods - by applying them to the everyday vocabulary we need in order to grow our English language skills.

In May we continued working on comprehending Literature, reading more chapters of When Stars Are Scattered, the real life story of Omar Mohammed and his brother. They were refugees from Somalia’s Civil War in the 1990s and the story is about their experiences in a Kenyan refugee camp before they move to the United States. I am hopeful that we will finish the book by the end of the year, and then students will have completed reading a 250-page book in English.

Students have done an excellent job paying attention to the story which is read entirely in English, talking about what they understand, answering comprehension questions, and explaining their answers by referencing the book.

We also did a mini-unit on talking about culture. We learned new vocabulary related to culture and multicultural events so that we could talk, read, and write about it.

As we head towards the end of the year, many of the clusters are holding special events and field trips for their students. It’s a special time for students. Please message me if you have questions or want help registering your student for events.

Foundational Reading Red

I am Diana Karamourtopoulos, your student's Foundational Reading class! In this class, we will work on improving our reading through learning phonics (the letters and sounds) in English. We continued working on reading longer words and common ending sounds in English. We also read a book called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. It tells the story of a girl who got Leukemia from the atomic bomb dropped in Hiroshima during World War II. We discussed resilience, and have been trying to see if we can make as many paper cranes as Sadako does! Students will be writing a timeline and summary of the book to finish up the year.

ELD 2 (Emerging)

In our ELD classes, we’ve spent the past couple of weeks exploring and demoing two potential curriculum options for the 2025–2026 school year. This has been an exciting opportunity for students to engage with different materials and learning styles. It’s important to us that students feel empowered in their learning, so we’ve been actively seeking their opinions and feedback. Their reactions, preferences, and overall feelings about each option are helping guide us toward a decision that best supports their growth and engagement.

In our reading classes, students have been wrapping up their unit on prefixes and have now transitioned into exploring suffixes. This past week, we focused on the suffixes -ish, -ous, -ify, and -ward. We also discussed how suffixes can change a word’s part of speech and how that helps us decide where and how to use the word in a sentence. Students have done a great job identifying these patterns and applying their knowledge to writing and grammar activities.

ELD 3 (Developing)

The month of May has been busy with lots of testing, especially for our 8th graders! But our ELD class has worked hard on vetting a new curriculum and experiencing learning at a different angle. While we explored the new materials, students had the opportunity to practice working with a specific partner for a few days at a time, they had very targeted oral language practice with structured daily routines, and were challenged with new vocabulary and word study activities. While covering the topic of Women in Sports, students developed new vocabulary and language structures to argue a point of view and express an opinion.

On Tuesday of this week we started a new unit about the Impact of Fear. Students will be reading about different natural disasters and researching specific events to document. Next week we will have Watertown Week and the Washington DC trip, so 8th graders will be participating in one of these events all week.

I look forward to the next two weeks of school as students finish up activities and say goodbye to a productive year of learning!

Foundational Reading - Blue Block

Our class has been practicing their reading skills and recording their improvement on Book Creator on a weekly basis! It’s amazing to see their improvement. We also began reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes together, and learning about a new culture and the tragic story of a girl who suffered the consequences of the atom bomb of Hiroshima. We are also learning how to fold an origami-style paper crane, which is an important detail of the story. Ask your students to share what they’ve learned from Sadako’s story!

ELD 4 (Expanding)

Hello! Students have been reading the legend of The Adventures of Ulysses, a retelling of the epic poem The Odyssey. Students have been working in a packet with different activities to better understand the tale: from recognizing metaphors, similes, and personification, drawing pictures of place or character descriptions to acting out scenes from the chapters. We'll finish the year with this book and CER on Ulysses.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns at sheila.gilmartin@watertown.k12.ma.us.

ESL Writing WIN ESL Writing WIN

Hello! Students are working on their last writing assignment: a short, descriptive autobiographical piece written in the third person. They'll finalize this writing with putting it on Book Creator. This is a nice mini capstone project to showcase their skills in perspective-taking and detailed narrative.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns at sheila.gilmartin@watertown.k12.ma.us.
