PL News 8/29
2022-2023
Ok! Check-off the first week of school. Done! It's been wonderful to have our students back in school! So many stories and such excitement!
As I mentioned before, I (almost always) send a newsletter out on Fridays to give families an idea of what is coming up in the next week or so. I tend to repeat information in the event you missed it the first time around.
Please note the PARKING information in this newsletter. I'll be inviting the Lombard Police Department to help us maintain a safe environment around our school in the coming weeks. All of the rules we have are to make sure our students and families are safe when arriving at or departing from school.
Curriculum Night is coming! Be sure to see the invite below!
Looking forward to another great year~

PL Parent Handbook
Second Step
Decades of research show the positive effects of universal, classroom-based SEL programs for children. There’s also broad recognition that benefits are even greater when children experience SEL throughout their day, across home, school, and out-of-school time environments, and throughout developmental stages. When implemented holistically, with a coordinated, community-wide approach, SEL can build stronger communities and support inclusive, equitable learning.
Staff will be reviewing SEL lessons weekly with students in the classrooms as part of weekly expectations. If you'd like more information, please use this link to learn more.
Inside Your Schools: District Handbook
Every year, District 44 reviews and updates its district parent handbook known as "Inside Your Schools." We encourage families to please take a moment to review the latest edition, which can be found by clicking here.
Change in Lunch Prices for the 2022-2023 School Year
The USDA waiver that allowed most school districts to serve free breakfast and free lunch to all students throughout the pandemic has expired. Therefore, this fall, Lombard District 44 will transition back to traditional meal service at our schools.
What does that mean for your family?
- Breakfast and Lunch is still available at all K-8 schools
- The cost of breakfast, which includes milk, is $1.75.
- The cost of a hot lunch, which includes milk, is $3.10 per day.
- The cost of milk alone is $.50.
- Monthly menus will soon be posted on the district website which is www.sd44.org > Parents > Lunch Menus.
There will be paid, free, and reduced-priced eligibilities for students
Prices for your child will be based on your household’s meal benefit status.
The application for free and reduced meals can be found on our website SD44.org > Parents>Food Service or by clicking here.
You can find more information by clicking here and scrolling down to the category "Additional Individual Documents."
Families should also be aware that schools are also facing many of the same challenges with the supply chain in receiving necessary food items. When this happens, school nutrition
professionals will do everything they can to serve an alternate, healthy option to your child. We will continue to communicate with you when this occurs.

The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward
Dan Pink in conversation with Julie Lythcott-Haims
Tue, Aug 30 @ 7:00 pm CDT - 8:00 pm CDT - Free
SUMMER READ HIGHLIGHT
“No regrets.” You’ve heard people proclaim it as a philosophy of life. “That’s nonsense, even dangerous,” says Daniel Pink in his latest bold and inspiring work, The Power of Regret. “Everybody has regrets. They’re a fundamental part of our lives. And if we reckon with them in fresh and imaginative ways, we can enlist our regrets to make smarter decisions, perform better at work and school, and deepen our sense of meaning and purpose.”
In The Power of Regret, Pink draws on research in psychology, neuroscience, economics, and biology to challenge widely held assumptions about emotions and behavior. Using the largest sampling of American attitudes about regret ever conducted as well as his own World Regret Survey—which has collected regrets from more than 16,000 people in 105 countries—he identifies the four core regrets that most people have. These four regrets, Pink argues, operate as a “photographic negative” of the good life. By understanding what people regret the most, we can understand what they value the most. And by following the simple, science-based, three-step process that he sets out, we can transform our regrets in a positive force for working smarter and living better.
Reviewing scientific research and providing real-world examples, Dan Pink offers practical wisdom on how all of us can thrive beyond mistakes — molding them into learning opportunities to be more productive and happier. In this GPS presentation Mr. Pink will lay out a dynamic new way of thinking — drawing on the largest survey ever done about Americans’ attitudes toward regret and exploring how each of us can use these insights to our advantage. Here are clear and practical takeaways for reimagining regret as a positive force so that all can live richer, more engaged lives.
Dan Pink is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including his latest, The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward, published in February. His other books include the New York Times bestsellers When and A Whole New Mind — as well as the #1 New York Times bestsellers Drive and To Sell is Human. Dan’s books have won multiple awards, have been translated into 42 languages, and have sold millions of copies around the world. He lives in Washington, DC, with his family.
This event will be presented virtually. The link to log in to this webinar from your computer, tablet or phone is: https://glenbard.zoom.us/j/86766798430
