Around the District
Painting the Rock
Staff and students painted the rock in White Rock in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day and Unity Day.
Chess Clubs Compete
The Los Alamos High School Chess Club is sitting in first place after the first round of the Northern Schools Chess League held at West Las Vegas High School on Monday. Teams from Barranca Mesa Elementary and Pinon Elementary also competed. The next meet will be on Nov. 8 at Santa Fe Prep.
Pie in the Face Day
Students at Aspen Elementary celebrated a successful Tiger Trot by nominating teachers to get pied in the face. A few teachers stayed inside the cafeteria while Mr. Lloyd opted to be outside during lunch.

Countdown to pie in the face
The Mountain Elementary FunD Run raised $22,000 this year. Students were selected to pie a teacher in the face as part of the school wide celebration.

Local Weaver Visits Art Class
Traditional belt and rain sash weaver Cris Velarde, Santa Clara Pueblo/Jicarilla Apache, visited 4th graders at Pinon Elementary to share his experiences as a weaver and demonstrated his weaving during art class at the school last week.
School Board Recognition
Winners in the Los Alamos County Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office 2024 Sticker Design Contest were recognized during the LAPS School Board meeting last week.

GoGuardian for Parents
The Technology Department would like to invite all parents/guardians to sign up for GoGuardian for Parents - an app for your smartphone that allows you to do the following:
See your student’s browsing history for the last 30 days.
Block sites on their student device while at home.
Set a schedule for when the device can have internet access at home.
Stop all internet access on the school device with the tap of a button.
Student devices are managed by the district IT department and GoGuardian for Parents allows you to manage our devices while they are home with you. If you’d like to sign up to use GoGuardian for Parents, please fill out the form below:

Fall Dance
Los Alamos Middle School will host a Fall Dance for LAMS students on Friday, Oct. 18.
Saturday School
Saturday School is open to all Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School students as an opportunity to catch up on late work, complete missed assignments, take make-up tests and receive help with homework.
All Saturday School sessions for the 2024-2025 school year will be in person in E-wing at LAHS.
Sessions run from 8:30 am - 11:30 am for 7th and 8th graders, and 8:30 am - 12:00 pm for high school students.

PSAT Exams
All 9th grade students at Los Alamos High School will take the PSAT 8/9 on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
All 10th grade students and any 11th grade students who want to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship program will take the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Registration for any Juniors interested in taking the PSAT/NMSQT will be open Sept. 30 through Oct. 16. The link to the form (which is only usable by laschools address) will be in the Junior Google Classroom.
Election Worker
Los Alamos County has an opening for a high school student Election Worker
Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Elections Manager or designee, assists in duties associated with primary, general, consolidated, and special elections or other election-related duties. Duties may include serving on the absentee, early voting and/or Election Day Precinct Boards. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications for Election Worker:
• Must be a registered voter in Los Alamos County.
• Must have the necessary capacity to carry out precinct board member functions with acceptable skill and dispatch.
• Must execute the precinct board member’s oath of office.
• Must attend at least one school of instruction before each election.
Election Workers that are minors must be at least 16 years of age and are not required to be a registered voter.

Drug Take Back Day
On Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) will be conducting its biannual DEA Drug Take Back Day. This event will begin at 10 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m. This will be held in the north parking lot off Central Avenue of the LAPD station 2500 Trinity Drive.
Items that have not been accepted in the past has included: Needles/ sharps, any liquids or creams, and aerosol/compressed medications. For this event, we will have supplies available for people to be able to dispose of their liquids, creams, and aerosols on site. We will also have a sharps container available for anyone to drop of their injectable medications.
This drug diversion program is a part of a national initiative by the DEA. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications.
This program has been very successful for the Los Alamos Police Department, and we are excited to participate again this Fall. For questions, please contact Evidence Technician Cpl. Samantha Terrazas, at 505-663-1888.
