Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
Tomorrow, your students may notice a few visitors around our campuses. We are honored to be one of the host schools for the Modern Learning Conference 25 (MLC25), welcoming educators from other districts as they tour our schools in the morning.
Modern Teacher is an educational support framework that helps school districts transition from traditional teaching methods to a modern, student-centered approach. Through this partnership, our staff receives professional development, strategic planning support, and tools to enhance student engagement and personalize learning. This collaboration has been instrumental in integrating technology and best practices that prepare our students for success in the digital age.
One way this transformation is taking shape in our district is through #WAVE, an approach that empowers students to take an active role in their learning. By setting goals, reflecting on progress, and working collaboratively, students develop essential life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. #WAVE fosters a supportive environment where students don’t just learn - they lead! This prepares them for success both in and beyond the classroom. Tomorrow our staff members will wear a shirt with the #WAVE logo - Work, Achieve, Vision, and Empower. Showcasing the efforts made daily for our students.
Our students have been informed by their teachers and are well-prepared for this exciting opportunity. This visit allows us to showcase the incredible work happening in our classrooms every day and highlights the dedication of our staff and students.
Thank you for your continued support!
Regards,
Derild Parsons

We'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.

Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.
Missing School for Illness?
Please remember to call your child’s school every day that they miss school due to an illness so the office staff can excuse them.
As stated above - EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT (State Law NRS 392.130). Any absence not excused by a medical professional will count against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided (not counted against student attendance).
Message from our Partners at Care Solace 💜
This week is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAwareness Week). Eating disorders are the second most fatal mental health disorder (source: NEDA). Due to the immense risk eating disorders have on our communities, educating ourselves on the signs, symptoms, and paths to recovery is important.
There are three categories of risk factors NEDA outlines for eating disorders:
- Biological - Our family's genetic makeup can affect our overall health, including the likelihood of an eating disorder. Have conversations with your family about struggles and discuss safety measures you can take to identify risks and seek help if needed.
- Psychological - Perfectionism is the strongest risk factor for developing an eating disorder. Many voices in our society tell us what is beautiful or acceptable. Setting unrealistic standards about our looks or body image can cause issues with our overall health.
- Social pressures - Pressure to become someone different can happen in our community when we experience bullying, isolation, or have a body type or culture that is different from friends and classmates.
We’re all valued and important. If you struggle with your body image, are bullied, or feel isolated at school and want to talk to someone, we’re here to help you.

Weekly School Highlights 🎉
Churchill County High School 💚🌊
Churchill County Middle School 💚🌊
Students at Churchill County Middle School had the exciting opportunity to take on staff members in the annual Students vs. Staff volleyball game. The competition was fierce, making it an exciting evening. The staff started out strong, defeating the seventh graders in three games. The eighth-grade girls then won against the eighth-grade boys in a very competitive match. However, the boys bounced back and ended up defeating the staff. In the final game, the staff and eighth-grade girls went head-to-head and split wins. This CCMS tradition is one that students and staff look forward to every year. It brings them together for some friendly competition and a whole lot of fun.

Jeremie Sorensen's 5th-grade art students designed their own guitars inspired by the artist Pablo Picasso. From 1901 to 1904 Picasso entered a period of his life that was referred to as the Blue Period. The main color of all his paintings from this time were primarily blue mixed with other colors. Students had to mix the hue blue with white and black to make different tints and shades. Students also added pastel chalks and embellished their guitars with yarn and plastic gemstones adding a unique touch to their projects.
E.C. Best Elementary School 💙🐶
Students at E.C. Best had an exciting opportunity to participate in Agriculture Day on Wednesday, February 19. Hosted by Churchill County High School’s FFA, the event allowed students to learn about various aspects of agriculture. Students in Angies Heck’s class were excited that they got to learn how to milk a cow and how milk gets from the cow to the grocery store. Students got to milk “Moolissa” making it a memorable experience for them. A special thank you to the CCHS FFA members for dedicating their time and knowledge, and to E.C. Best teacher Melissa Humphrey for organizing the event.

LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Bed Bugs
Winter seasonal changes bring about infestations and household inconveniences.
Bed bugs are a nuisance, but they are not known to cause or spread disease. They are usually
active at night and can irritate the human skin. The bite is initially painless, but it may become
swollen and itch, much like a mosquito bite.
The source of bed bugs often cannot be determined, as they may be found in many places,
including hotels, hospitals, theaters and schools. Finding a bed bug does not mean that the
building is infested. Adults & children can unknowingly bring bed bugs into buildings,
including schools. In response to this seasonal concern, Churchill County School District
continually works to identify pests, provide inspections of schools and have licensed pest
control specialists treat classrooms and schools as appropriate.
If you have experienced bedbugs in your home, we strongly recommend seeking professional
assistance from a qualified pest control company. If your child has any bites, you should contact your health care provider.
Further information on preventing bed bugs are available on the following website.
