Then this BOOK STUDY is for 🫵YOU!
Led by NPESC's Gifted Services Coordinator, Susan Capucini
Contact Hours: 9
October 1st, 2023 - January 31, 2024
Self-Paced & Virtual Meetings
Winner of the Autism Society of America’s Dr. Temple Grandin Award for the Outstanding Literary Work in Autism
A groundbreaking book on autism, by one of the world’s leading experts, who portrays autism as a unique way of being human—this is “required reading...Breathtakingly simple and profoundly positive” (Chicago Tribune).
Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, communication problems, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now, this updated and expanded edition of Dr. Barry M. Prizant’s Uniquely Human tackles new language such as shifting from “person-first language” to “identity-first language,” diversity of identity in the autism sphere, and the future of autistic advocacy by amplifying the voices of autistic and neurodivergent individuals.
“A must-read for anyone touched by autism…Dr. Prizant’s Uniquely Human is a crucial step in promoting better understanding and a more humane approach” (Associated Press). Instead of classifying “autistic” behaviors as signs of pathology, Dr. Prizant sees them as part of a range of strategies to cope with a world that feels chaotic and overwhelming. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports that will lead to more desirable behavior and a better quality of life.
Uniquely Human is a “brilliant” (Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes) approach to autism in the modern age that provides “common sense [and] practical advice” (Temple Grandin, author of The Autistic Brain) drawn from Dr. Prizant’s four-decade career. It conveys a deep respect for people with autism and their own unique qualities. Filled with humanity and wisdom, Uniquely Human “should reassure parents and caregivers of kids with autism and any other disability that their kids are not broken, but, indeed, special (Booklist, starred review).

What is Gifted Education?
What does it mean to be gifted?
Let's unpack the answers to these questions and more!
Whether you are just beginning your journey as a classroom-gifted service provider, or you could use a refresher, this day is for you!
Together we will learn the language of gifted education by discussing, exploring, and designing through understanding:
- Gifted education is a specialized approach to teaching and supporting students who demonstrate exceptional abilities, talents, or potential in one or more areas, such as academics, arts, leadership, or creativity.
- It involves tailoring the curriculum, teaching methods, and learning experiences to meet the unique learning needs of gifted students. This may include acceleration, enrichment, or more advanced content.
- Gifted education often includes the development of Written Education Plans (WEPs) to address specific academic and social-emotional needs.
- Gifted programs focus on promoting deeper understanding, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving, going beyond the standard curriculum to challenge students intellectually.
- Educators of gifted students acknowledge the social and emotional characteristics of gifted students and provide support to help them cope with issues like perfectionism, underachievement, and peer relationships.
- Gifted education is important because it equips students with critical thinking skills, adaptability, and a love for learning. These attributes prepare them to face future challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the world. Ensuring that gifted education is available and accessible to all qualified students promotes equity in education. It helps break down barriers that may prevent gifted students from underserved communities from reaching their potential.
👉 Note: This PD pairs nicely with the Uniquely Human book study (see below) also starting this month! These 2 events will get you your 15 hours for the year; covering all of the Gifted PD competencies, except for WEP writing!

The research is clear and adamant- getting students cognitively active in processing information yields significant learning effects.
Let's spend the day exploring, discussing, engaging in, and designing activity structures for accomplishing two jobs:
- Getting students' minds active and engaged; stirring up the pot so-to-speak, calling onto prior knowledge, and contextual skills before studying it - to become ACTIVATORS of their learning!
- Getting students cognitively active in summarizing for themselves what was important, what they have learned, how it is important, and/or how it fits with what they already know - to become SUMMARIZERS of their learning!
