Math Intervention Update
Dear Families,
At Brunswick Junior High School we are proud that our teachers continually engage in professional development and seek innovative, research-based ways to support students. Recently, as part of our learning around our new math curriculum, iReady, we have also investigated how we provide math intervention to our students. Currently, students receiving math intervention go through a formal referral process, have a schedule change, and receive regular services for an extended period of time, often over several years.
For the third trimester this year, we are adapting our approach utilizing our new learning and our deep understanding that all students have different and unique levels of need. We are adjusting our binary focus to allow for more flexible student groupings based on the most recent information that we have about students' understanding of math concepts. This means that based on individualized student data:
Some students will remain in regularly scheduled math intervention.
Some students will exit regularly scheduled math intervention and be placed in a flexible group based on the current unit being taught in math. For example, if a math unit is around fractions and a student demonstrates a specific struggle with fractions, the student will receive additional targeted support around fractions during the math class, a WIN, HOWL, or Flex period.
Some students will enter flexible groups based on the current unit being taught in math.
Some students will exit regularly scheduled math intervention and transition to monitor status.
What does this mean for my child?
-Each time a student moves to or from flexible grouping math support we will notify families of this change through email.
-Each time a student enters or exits regularly scheduled math intervention, we will continue to follow our formal referral process which also includes communication with caregivers.
We are excited about this change and the individualized approach that it will provide staff and students. Please feel free to reach out to me, or your child’s math teacher, with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Laurie Catanese
