Health Tip of the Week
Protect your body against stress - with stress!
Recently, Greater Good -- the magazine published by UC Berkeley's positive psychology hub, the Greater Good Science Center -- rounded up key insights from The Stress Prescription, a new book by University of California, San Francisco professor and health psychologist Elissa Epel. The article walks through seven steps people can take to become more resilient to stress.
It's not news that exercise helps protect your body from stress. But in the article, Epel goes a step further. It's not just that working out helps you forget your worries or keeps your heart in top working order -- though it certainly will do those things. The right kind of exercise, she explains, actually trains your body to get better at processing stress at the cellular level. This is called "hormetic stress" - occasional shots of high stress that our bodies can tolerate and easily recover from.
