Thursday, January 16th will be our last FAFSA Night before the February 1st deadline for TN Promise. If you have not completed your senior’s FAFSA and need assistance, please attend this event to assist you with completing the FAFSA. You will need to bring a laptop device and your 2018 tax returns and other financial information such as child support received, SSI benefits, etc. if applicable. It will also save you time to have your FSAID for one parent and your senior. You can also register for those at www.fafsa.gov prior to this event. 5:30-7:00 in room CS 208 beside the Library/Media Center. Signs will direct to this location.

The dates with asterisks (**) require pre-registration so that we know to reserve a seat for you. To pre-register, email Coach Etheridge (aetheridge@ortn.edu) and indicate the session that interests you. While we are specifically targeting juniors, who take the State ACT on March 31, all ORHS students are welcome.

ACT Practice: The Oak Ridge Chapter of the NAACP and Oak Ridge Schools are co-sponsoring Saturday ACT Prep sessions at the Scarboro Center on Saturday, January 25, and Saturday, February 1, from 8:00 AM-11:30 AM. On the 25th we will focus on the English and Reading tests, and on the 1st we’ll focus on the Math and Science tests. Instructors include Ms. Estep, Ms. Hale, Ms. Vaughan, Ms. Hondorf, Dr. Thomas, and Coach Etheridge. If you’d like to participate, please email Coach Etheridge (Aetheridge@ortn.edu) and indicate the date(s) that interest you. In particular we’d like to see students who cannot attend our Wednesday afternoon sessions, but all students are welcome. We’ll have door prizes and lunch.

The next MAJOR AUTHOR deadline is the January 21st for the secondary research cards and the bibliography entries. That work is due at the beginning of class on the 21st.

The AMC 12 A Mathematics exam will take place on Thursday, January 30th, 1st and 2nd periods. Students that have registered to take the exam should report to the Amphitheatre by 7:45 am. Please bring #2 pencils, but calculators are not allowed.

The AMC 10B and 12B will be administered on Wednesday, February 5th in LC327.

The National German Exam will take place on Tuesday, January 28th during 1st until 3rd period in the Library classroom.

The German 3 Honors students followed an invitation from a Woodland Elementary first grade teacher to present a unique holiday from another country.

The German 3 Honors students were immediately excited. They brainstormed, planned and delivered a skit, appropriate for first graders, on Sankt Nikolaus, one of German children’s favorite Christmas traditions.

The students showed team spirit in writing the skid, picking roles, organizing the transportation to and from the event and being open for a question and answer session following their presentation.

Abigail Shanken, Jonathan Hiatt and Bence Kertesz were the narrators while Levi Parish and David Joy came as “Bischof Sankt Nikolaus” with his helper “Knecht Ruprecht”. Props and skid left the first graders glued to the Oak Ridge High School students lips. Lots of questions were asked figuring out the difference between Santa Claus in the USA and Sankt Nikolaus in Germany. They did not fear “Knecht Ruprecht” when he gave them all a traditional gift of mandarins. No, not coals! – they all were good kids in 2019.

Special thanks go to two other students who could not participate in the performance but played a role in the preparation: Brandon Herandez and Terrance Ladd. Thank you to the German 3 Honors students!

The Choral Department is selling cookbooks with recipes collected from ORHS Choral students, ORHS Choral Boosters, ORHS Faculty and Staff, and friends of the ORHS Choral Department. The cookbooks are $10. They can be ordered directly from the ORHS Choral Boosters President, Karen Vacaliuc (kvacaliuc@gmail.com ) This is great for birthdays or that New Year’s resolution to cook more?! for your friends, family and ORHS alumni! Help support the chorus and purchase several copies of their cookbook. Copies are the perfect size for a stocking stuffer!

The Oak Ridge High School Band Mattress Fundraiser is coming soon! There will be 30 different styles of beds on display for customers to try. The beds are new, brand name, made to order, available in all sizes, and cost less than retail stores. In addition to beds, there will also be luxury pillows and adjustable power bases!! NHS Tutoring—The National Honor Society holds tutoring sessions every week. No matter if you need math help or assistance writing an essay, NHS students are here to help! Come get tutoring relief for assignments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-3:45.

January 16, 2020 Tennis Orientation Meeting from 6-7:00 PM for players/parents in ORHS Amphitheater. New and returning players can scan QR Code for the CANVAS Course “Tennis Program” to peruse goals and policies to be covered during the meeting. Students can self-enroll in “Tennis Program” using join code JEXWKK.

Students can purchase an All-Sports Athletic Pass for $55.00. This pass will grant admission to all home games for ALL sports! The exception would be TSSAA hosted playoff games. Passes can be purchased at any time in the Main Office from Mrs. Seals.

2. Decisions are made by 5:15 am - at the latest and notifications will begin thereafter

3. Delay schedules can include - 1 hour delay (breakfast is served); 2 hour delay (no breakfast; or Full day cancellation.

Parents can use this to easily link their ValuCard to their school of choice at checkout.
