Volume 8
From the Director
What an exciting time of year! We are in the final weeks of the school year, and it seems like the days are flying by.
This week we’re looking forward to hosting over 100 middle school students from around the region for our annual Career Challenge Day event, in partnership with Vermont Works for Women (VWW). Career Challenge Day invites young middle school girls and gender expansive youth into technical centers to explore career pathways in which women and nonbinary folks are traditionally underrepresented. A key part of VWW's mission is at follows: “At VWW, we want Vermont to be a state where all can grow and thrive. Equity is at the heart of this vision and our opportunity to create a better tomorrow for women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals.” As a center, we support this mission, and we’re thrilled to welcome young people to engage with all of the pathways available to them here at BTC.
In addition to the end of the year excitement across BTC programs and events like Career Challenge Day, the reality of standardized testing is upon us. All career and technical education centers are required to conduct ACT WorkKeys testing at least twice per year. We are focusing primarily on seniors who are graduating in June, and some juniors who are completing our 1-year Intro to Health Care program. Students are required to test in Applied Math, Literacy, and Graphic Literacy. Your student may mention testing, with accompanying eye roll; this is likely the testing they’re talking about. If you have any questions about these tests, please feel free to reach out at any time.
As always, thank you for your support of BTC, and for supporting your student’s educational journey here.

BTC in the News
Pre-Tech Low Budget Trailer
Pre-Tech students worked together to create one cohesive trailor for their film project, and then each student used the footage to practice editing techniques and software to create their own version of the trailer. Click on the button below to see more of their creations!
Health Sciences Academy-Phlebotomy Blood Draw
April break kicked off with the phlebotomy draw day for HSA last Saturday. The students' families showed up for them, and the Emergency Medical Services community certainly showed up to support the students, as did some young phlebotomists from UVMMC. Students are nearly 2/3 of the way through their required venipunctures. There will be more events in May if you're willing to donate a vein!

Education, Training & Leadership
Student Immersion: Field Experiences, College Tours, and Professional Development
In ETL, students have been immersed in their field experiences at Edmunds Elementary School and in the community. Some highlights include leading student circles, running math small groups, creating lesson plans, as well as supporting in the student support center/on the behavior team with student plans. Some off-campus student experiences include the preschool at Champlain Elementary School and Crow's Path Forest School at Rock Point.
Next week students will head out on an overnight New England College tour field trip! They will be visiting Norwich University, Southern New Hampshire University, UMass Amherst, and Vermont State University at Castleton. Students will be touring campuses, and learning about the college experience and admissions process, with a focus on education and social work programs.
Instructors Becca Shute and Linda Randall attended the Collin's Writing Workshop at the end of March where they learned about four different types of writing prompts, how to integrate them into CTE course instruction, and to encourage students to learn through writing. They look forward to practicing these new skills through the end of the year and restructuring the curriculum for next year.
On May 3, the ETL Program will attend the Vermont Council on Literacy's annual conference, featuring Keynote Speaker Kelly Gallagher.
Aviation and Aerospace Technology
Hardware, Electrical Studies, Competitions, and Alumni Success
The Aviation Juniors finished up their aircraft hardware unit where they learned how aircraft grade bolts, nuts, rivets and other hardware are coded. They also spent a lot of time riveting sheet metal together with solid shank rivets. Moving forward, they will be learning how to control, remove, and prevent corrosion on aircraft.
After four months of electrical studies, the Seniors wrapped up their electrical multimeters and troubleshooting unit. The class went through the SnapOn multimeter training in addition to their usual curriculum and multiple students have already taken and passed the SnapOn multimeter certification test. They are now in an electric motors unit and are hand winding their own small electric motor.
The Senior class also competed in the SkillsUSA Aviation Maintenance Competition where BTC swept the top three positions.
Instructor Jason Cooper, also heard from an aviation alumni, Christian Surdak, who graduated from BTC last year and joined the Air Force. He just graduated from basic training and is headed to school for air traffic control.
Featured Faculty
Emily Kayoi
Emily is always ready to connect with students; whether it’s about academics, the English language, or just life, she’s there to listen, learn and offer support. As an English Language Instructor, she is primarily working in the Digital Media Lab and Criminal Justice programs this year, and has enjoyed learning more about these fields.
Emily hopes students feel relaxed and supported when they work with her, and her favorite part of the year is seeing how student work evolves over time, and seeing their senior capstone projects come together. “The work students are producing shows incredible growth and is a testament to how skilled, creative, thoughtful, and resilient these students are. It’s always exciting to see where students' talents take them!”
Yvonne
Yvonne has always enjoyed learning— everything from language and music to math and technology. As the Academic Support Specialist and English Language Teacher, she hopes to share her passion for learning with her students. “As a teacher, you never stop learning, and it’s exciting to be a part of students’ learning processes.” She loves helping students figure things out for themselves, and discovering the different ways that each person approaches projects and skill-building.
This year, Yvonne has been primarily working with students in the Automotive program, and one of the highlights of her year has been building engines alongside her students. As the school year draws to a close, she is excited to see what students will choose to do next with all of the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout their time at BTC.
Dan Capps
English Language Teacher Dan Capps has been teaching in the Intro to Healthcare program for five years now, and he loves seeing how students grow their skills and confidence throughout school each year. On day one, students often arrive feeling a mixture of excitement and uncertainty, but by the time May rolls around, students are empowered by their new healthcare skills.
Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to connect with community members from various healthcare backgrounds, often from fields which are new to students, and Dan appreciates seeing how these experiences can shape a student’s trajectory. “For example, students may enter BTC with a goal of becoming a nurse, but through learning experiences, industry tours, guest speakers, and guidance from instructors, they may be attracted to opportunities in related fields like diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, or emergency medicine.“ This spring, he is looking forward to hearing from students as they go on clinical work experiences, where they will work alongside nurses and other medical staff to learn and practice personal care skills with patients and residents.
Adult and Continuing Education
It's been a month filled with hands-on learning and exciting collaborative efforts. This month, three students have been hard at work completing the installation of the Bell 206 engine. This complex task requires precision and attention to detail, and we're happy to share that they've successfully completed the challenge.
Meanwhile, two other students have been contemplating their next steps in the OH-6 engine installation process. This critical stage demands careful planning and problem-solving skills, and we're confident that these students will overcome any obstacles that they encounter.
Finally, all our aviation enthusiasts came together to taxi the King Air aircraft. This experience allowed them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, adding another dimension in their aviation journey.
