Principal's Message
Happy Sunday!
I hope you're all doing well! At school we are busy working with students to remind them of everything they need to complete to graduate! We are officially 3 weeks out from graduation and want to make sure that you and your student are fully informed about all of the requirements!
1) For starters they must complete all the required courses and get the necessary 220 credits to graduate. Your student's supervising teacher and our Counselor can assist if you have any questions about that!
2) 20 hours of community service are required to graduate. There's a community service opportunity below in this newsletter! Please have a conversation with us if you have any concerns about how to complete the service requirement. Here's a link to the actual form that needs to be filled out and turned in to our counselor, Mr. Blanchfield.
3) Complete the FAFSA or the FAFSA Opt-out. I have sent you several emails (yesterday and last week) about the FAFSA and the link to the FAFSA opt out form. If you choose to complete the "opt out" form, it should take you only a few minutes! It’s basically a Google survey that makes sure you understand what the FAFSA is, why it’s important, and that you can fill it out at any time (regardless of whether you fill out the “opt out” form). Technically, seniors who are 18 can fill out this “opt-out” form on their own. Currently, we are FIRST sending the "opt out" link to all parents of seniors!
4) Last Day to Purchase a Cap & Gown
The last day to purchase a Cap and Gown is...
Wednesday, May 22
10 am to 12 noon
$65--Cash only!
Enter the main office doors to get started on 5/22!
5) Please read the detailed info below about graduation! We hope it's helpful! If something is confusing, please give me a call or send me an email!
Thanks for reading! We want these final weeks to go smoothly so please reach out if you need any help!
Sincerely,
David Schlottman
Principal

Are You Planning on Attending Susan H. Nelson Independent Study High School Next Fall?
If you are considering Susan H. Nelson Independent Study High School for the 2024-2025 school year, you are likely ready to embrace the challenge of an independent study program. This bold and rewarding choice can significantly enhance your educational experience by offering personalized learning opportunities. To ensure success, it is essential to approach your studies with careful planning, a structured approach, and a proactive mindset. Here are key strategies to help you succeed in your independent study program.
1. Set Clear Goals and Objectives
Begin by defining clear, achievable goals. These goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Having a clear vision of your objectives will keep you focused and motivated.
2. Create a Structured Plan
A well-structured plan is vital for success. Outline the topics to be covered, resources needed, a timeline for tasks, and evaluation methods. Develop a weekly schedule that includes dedicated study periods, regular breaks, and time for extracurricular activities. This balance will prevent burnout and keep the learning process enjoyable.
3. Develop Strong Study Habits
Effective study habits are crucial. Create a conducive study environment free from distractions. Techniques like active reading, note-taking, summarizing, and questioning enhance comprehension and retention. Use tools like calendars, planners, and apps for time management. The Pomodoro Technique, which involves studying for 25 minutes followed by a short break, can improve focus and productivity.
4. Embrace Self-Reflection and Adaptability
Independent study requires self-awareness and adaptability. Regularly reflect on your progress to assess what is working and what needs adjustment. This might involve tweaking your schedule, seeking additional resources, or changing study methods. Self-assessment tools like quizzes and reflection journals help gauge your understanding and identify areas for improvement. Being open to feedback and willing to make changes is crucial for continuous growth.
5. Stay Motivated and Reward Yourself
Maintaining motivation can be challenging. Set up a reward system to incentivize staying on track. Rewards can be as simple as taking a break to enjoy a favorite activity or as significant as a planned outing. Connecting with peers who share similar academic interests can also provide motivation and a sense of community. Study groups or online forums offer support, share resources, and provide a platform for discussing ideas and challenges.
Conclusion
The independent study program at Susan H. Nelson High School can be a transformative experience, offering the freedom to explore passions and develop essential life skills. By setting clear goals, creating a structured plan, utilizing resources, developing strong study habits, embracing self-reflection, and staying motivated, you can make your independent study work effectively. With dedication and proactive effort, the benefits of independent study can extend far beyond high school, preparing you for future academic and professional endeavors.
