January's harvest of the month is parsnips! Parsnips are an often overlooked cousin of the carrot and can be used in similar ways. Click the photo for a link to some parsnip recipes.
December Recap
Buckley
In nutrition lessons, 1st and 3rd grade students learned about the 5 food groups and made banana "butterflies." The 5th grade students learned about healthy goal setting, and practiced proper knife skills while making fruit salad.
In Farm to School, 2nd grade students learned about where their food comes from and the importance of farmers and healthy soils in our food system. The 4th grade students learned about hot crops versus cold crops while practicing their 6 plant parts.
December's taste test was warm, delicious cinnamon pears which were a big hit amongst students and staff.
Courtade
In December, kindergarten students learned about the function of the stem of a plant with a celery experiment. Students placed celery stalks in water with food coloring and made predictions (or hypotheses) about what might happen. After 24 hours, students made observations about the changes in celery. They enjoyed ants on a log and celery snails (see photo).
The 2nd and 3rd grade students were flavor explorers and learned about different ways to describe the way food tastes. They practiced adjectives and identifying the 5 basic tastes, salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami.
The 4th grade students learned about hot crops versus cold crops while practicing their 6 plant parts.
Northport
The monthly taste test was a beet smoothie. Despite their initial skepticism, over 90% of students who tried it voted that they liked or loved it.
Suttons Bay
This month our taste test was a maple-mashed butternut squash! Many students had not tried a sweet recipe with butternut squash. Overall they enjoyed it! See below for the recipe.
