Principal's Message
Hello,
As a father, I constantly worry about my own children's safety when they are behind the wheel or as passengers. On my way to Stockbridge on Friday evening a group of DHS students were in the car next to mine. The students were obeying the traffic laws and seemed to be doing just fine, however, they were a good distance from Decatur and that is always a concern for me. I want to address student safety in this weekly message. For the next two months or longer we will be full blast into our fall activities and sports seasons. I know we can track our student's whereabouts better than ever but we need to do more.
Please take this opportunity to have a conversation with your student. First, encourage them to make good decisions and to talk with their friend circle about making good decisions. Talk about a plan if they get into a situation that is not positive and how they can reach out to you or someone else in the family that can support them. The support can come in the form of brainstorming, a simple chat, or even reminding them how to step away from a situation and get a ride from someone to ensure they are as safe as possible.
Since coming to Decatur in 2007 we have been able to avoid tragedies that have struck other communities over and over again. I know that having conversations about making good decisions has a definite impact on student safety. We must all work together to support this mission and the result will be a safe and productive school year.
Sincerely,
Duane Sprull Ed.D.
