Fall into Learning: November Updates from MESD
As we step into November, we embrace the season of gratitude and reflection. This month, we celebrate not only the changing of the seasons but also the remarkable achievements of our students and staff. We invite you to join us in honoring the 50th anniversary of Health School Services, a milestone that highlights our commitment to the well-being of every student. In this edition, you'll find inspiring stories, important updates, and information about upcoming events that showcase the vibrant spirit of our MESD community. Together, let’s continue to support and uplift one another!
As Thanksgiving approaches, we recognize that this holiday carries different meanings for everyone. While many celebrate it as a time for gratitude, family, and connection, we also acknowledge that it can be a complex and painful reminder for Indigenous communities due to the history tied to colonization. In this spirit, we invite our community to reflect on the many ways we can show gratitude—whether by gathering with loved ones, supporting others, or learning more about the diverse histories that shape our understanding of this time. However you choose to spend the season, we are grateful for the students, families, and staff who make our community stronger every day.

Celebration and Community at Three Lakes and Riverside’s Family Night
Submitted by Principal Joy Koenig
Three Lakes and Riverside High Schools hosted their first Family Night since 2019, bringing together families, students, and staff for a joyful evening of activities and connection. The event featured pumpkin painting, a photo booth, student project displays, and hands-on experiences like a heavy equipment simulator and virtual welder.
Families enjoyed warm drinks from the Coffee Cart, participated in a Bingo challenge with exciting prizes, and took home swag bags filled with Fab Lab creations. Principal Joy Koenig expressed gratitude for the community’s support, emphasizing the importance of celebrating student progress and resilience. The success of this event sets the stage for more community celebrations in the future.
Celebrating Student Success at DEL School
Submitted by Bich Do and Christine Otto
BreakFree Education is a national organization committed to creating quality educational programs that inspire and engage students in confinement. At the Donald E. Long (DEL) School, students regularly participate in BreakFree’s monthly Educational Initiatives, which provide hands-on, project-based learning opportunities through exciting challenges. These initiatives also offer students the chance to compete with peers across the country.
In September, DEL students eagerly embraced the Unleashed Race Car Challenge. Through this initiative, they explored scientific concepts such as force, motion, and velocity, applying their newfound knowledge to design, build, and test balloon-powered race cars. After multiple rounds of testing and improvements, students submitted their final designs to this national competition.
We are thrilled to announce that two of our DEL students earned second place with their collaborative race car design! Competing alongside students from similar facilities nationwide, our young engineers demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and determination.
Please join us in celebrating the achievements of these talented students—congratulations to our incredible race car builders at DEL!
