Eagle Express
Summer June 2024
Principal's Corner
Eagles,
In my final address this school year, I want to lay the first stone on the road to the next.
Today, I attended a professional development session for principals that focused on reflecting on our work, the work of our teams, the state of educational leadership, and the profession across the state. Inevitably, our conversation drifted to standardized state tests and the accountability they and their high stakes are meant to inform. The nature of how the state examines students' abilities has evolved year after year in style, substance, scale, and weight, and so have the accountability metrics for public schools.
The test has undergone a significant shift in recent years, becoming heavily reading-dependent and now heavily writing-dependent. This change has been implemented across all grade levels, introducing crucial skills that students need to be successful. While this change is beneficial for students starting in kindergarten, it poses a challenge for students in advanced grades. They are now faced with a test that requires more than one to two years of experience under the new requirements, without the benefit of years of incremental and scaffolded instruction. This lack of a strong foundation for their understanding is a significant hurdle.
Standardized test performance has dropped statewide. Where the thought of creating writing-dependent tests was inconceivable, artificial intelligence makes the millions of students taking the test a quick and inexpensive proposition. Now, writing is part of every level and subject of the exam, and the nature and direction of teaching have taken a sharp turn. Most fairly, it is a reasonable and necessary change but unsupported. As in a vehicle moving at speed, quick changes can have drastic consequences, whiplash being the least of them.
All this is to say that the nature of teaching and learning is changing for the better but quickly. It's not just a change for students, but for all of us. We, as principals and educators, MUST CHANGE WITH IT, and our role in this adaptation is crucial.
Expectations for students, as well as those for administration and teachers, will change. These changes will require a proactive approach in refining instructional planning, delivery practices, and responses when students need to meet standards. It is time now, more than ever, for students to put their hands on the wheel of their education, and for us to guide them.
These changes may cause stress for some students, but our teachers and staff will support them every step of the way. In the coming months, we will work to provide you with detailed information about how you can support your students through the transition. Through the principal's coffees, open houses, IB nights, and other gatherings, we will help our community better understand the new testing requirements, the steps we will take, and how you can support your students at home. We can't do it without you!
The quote, "The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it is the same problem you had last year," is attributed to John Foster Dulles, the United States Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Through reflection and open and honest discourse, we make sure that the problems we face today do not persist year after year. These changes will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders. We will make readers and writers of all of our students.
Rest assured that WE, the Eagles, are up to the challenge.
Yours most sincerely and respectfully,
Luis De La Garza

Luis De La Garza

End of Year Celebrations
8th Grade Walk
Retirement Farewell from Dr. Aquino for Mrs. Geer!
Congratulations to Mrs. Geer who is celebrating retirement after over 37 years of service to students! She served as a Woodlawn Academy Spanish teacher for 2 years! She was proud to retire from what she thought was an amazing school, but most proud to be able to teach and spread the beautiful Spanish language and culture!
Congratulations, Mrs. Geer! We will miss you!
First Dual Language Cohort Graduating from Woodlawn Academy
Mr. & Ms. Eagle!
A new tradition is that an all around 8th grade boy and girl are selected to represent our Mr. & Ms. Eagle. This year we did have a tie between two outstanding 8th grade boys for Mr. Eagle, Adric Rivas & Ezekiel Gonzales! Congratulations to our Ms. Eagle, Amariey Flores!
Goodbye, Jennifer Salazar, Assistant Head of School!
As the end of the year came, so did some important changes occur. We had to say farewell to an important person that has served our Woodlawn community in many capacities, Mrs. Salazar. She came to Woodlawn with broad leadership experience and filled the minds of our students as a Science 8th grade teacher. She soon moved into the role of the Middle Years Programme Coordinator at Woodlawn, serving a wider part of our Woodlawn Community, ensuring the the MYP was strong and progressing. It wasn't long before Mrs. Salazar elevated to the role of Assistant Head of School at Woodlawn. There were few dry eyes upon saying goodbye to such a caring, warm, and joyful leader here at Woodlawn Academy. She will be spreading her wings and move into a new leadership position with Prek-4-SA!
Mrs. Salazar, thank you for sharing your service & caring heart with our students and school community here at Woodlawn Academy. We are so happy for you and your new adventure! You will be greatly missed!
Once an eagle, always an eagle!
