Counseling Corner:
Just as you keep a careful eye on your middle schooler’s physical health, it’s important to keep tabs on their mental well-being, too. Here’s how:
- Start a conversation. Talking about mental health struggles lets your middle grader know they’re not alone. Try saying, “I heard a lot of kids are stressed or depressed lately. How are you feeling?” Or they might be more comfortable opening up if you keep the focus off of them: “How are your friends doing? Have they mentioned feeling worried or sad?”
- Keep talking. Make conversations about emotions part of everyday life, not something you bring up only when there’s a problem. At dinner, ask everyone to share something that made them feel good that day.

Tapping Individual Potential (TIP)
The Community Foundation is interested in identifying children in grades 4-8 within the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools who have extraordinary talent or potential and who face extraordinary circumstances that limit individualized enhancement opportunities. The Community Foundation has established an educational fund from which Principals, School Counselors, or Teachers may request grants to facilitate individualized programs for identified students.
DEADLINES: Fall-Spring September 15, Summer-March 15. All applications should be turned in to School Counselors or ENCORE teachers before submitting to The Community Foundation. Final arrangements for student participation in the program should be made by the ENCORE teacher/counselor/or person submitting the application.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Susan K. Purcell-Orleck, SEL Facilitator
All kids and teens feel stressed at times. Stress is a normal response to changes and challenges. And life is full of those — even during childhood. We tend to think of stress as a bad thing, caused by bad events. But upcoming good events (like graduations, holidays, or new activities) also can cause stress. Kids and teens feel stress when there’s something they need to prepare for, adapt to, or guard against. They feel stress when something that matters to them is at stake. Change often prompts stress — even when it’s a change for the better. Stress has a purpose. It’s a signal to get ready.
