Gratitude
This month, we are Grateful to be talking about Gratitude! Gratitude means choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives. Can you remember a time when someone did something for you that made your day better or made you feel happy? You probably felt Gratitude for that person in that moment. This month, we will learn more about how to practice Gratitude and how to express it to others.
Want to help our kids grow and discover. Please fill out the link above.
We need all the help we can get to make our events possible. Please fill out the volunteer application.

THANK YOU David (Hudlow Custodian) and Pima County
The Health Department is glad that Hudlow was able to take a pallet of Lysol Wipes from the warehouse. The Lysol Wipes and all PPE/Covid supplies are part of the PHEPS Department, which has quite a bit of personnel that oversee a lot of functions, but primarily Richard Sosa and Isai Gomez are the ones that manage PPE and Covid Test kits (ag cards and self-tests). There is a process when it comes to ordering supplies and below are two links for requesting PPE and Test kits if needed. However due to supply chain demands, supplies may become limited. Carlos Jaimez and David Morales were the ones that delivered to the school. As a part of a different division known as Business Ops (Central Supply) and our primary emphasis is servicing our clinics and community.
The backstory behind this delivery started with PHEPS and their focus on dispersing as much of their stock as possible as they are in the process of implementing an upgraded inventory system to start fresh. David thought of Hudlow and generously offered it to the school.

K-4 Suspension/ Expulsion Law
Many parents have questioned the process of how and why students get suspended or how discipline is imposed when incidents occur. Hudlow staff, teachers and Principal obey the TUSD Governing Board process, rules and expectations. We have a Code of Conduct that we follow, and use as our guide when it comes to discipline. The process is lengthy, we must document, attempt interventions and intervene many times. Here is the new law and how it will come into effect on October 31st, 2023:
Principal and or Principal Designee Cannot suspend or expel K-4 students, unless:
- Student is age 7 or older;
- Student engaged in specified type of conduct;
- Failure to remove student would create a safety threat that cannot otherwise reasonably be addressed or that qualifies as “aggravating circumstances”;
- Before suspension/expulsion, school uses alternative behavioral and disciplinary interventions (if safe and feasible, and ideally in consultation with student’s parents); and
- School district has readmission procedure for suspended/expelled students within statutory timelines.
Conduct that may be basis for K-4 suspension/expulsion:
- Unauthorized possession of a dangerous weapon;
- Possession, use, or sale of drugs (not marijuana);
- Immediately endangering the health or safety of others; or
- Behavior that qualifies as “aggravating circumstances,” as long as certain conditions are met.
“Aggravating circumstances” defined as behavior that:
- Has been documented by the school;
- Prevents other students from learning or the teacher from controlling classroom; and
- Is unresponsive to targeted interventions (must be documented).
May suspend/expel for aggravating circumstances only if all of the following apply:
- Student is engaged in persistent behavior that has been documented by the school and that prevents other pupils from learning or prevents the teacher from controlling classroom;
- Student’s ongoing behavior is unresponsive to targeted interventions as documented through an established intervention process that includes consultation with a school counselor, school psychologist or other mental health professional or social worker;
- Student’s parent or guardian was notified and consulted about the ongoing behavior; and
- Before suspension/expulsion, the school provides the student with a disability screening and the screening finds that the behavioral issues were not the result of a disability.
Expulsion of K-4 student is required if student brings firearm to school (may be modified by governing board on case-by-case basis)
Friends of the Oro Valley Library- THANK YOU!!!
We got our shipment of books from Follett thanks to the generous grant from The Friends of the Oro Valley Library.
It's always a thrill for us to get new and shiny books that support our educational mission and enrich the lives of our students (especially since we haven't had a book budget in years!).
So, a heartfelt thank you from Hudlow Elementary School for the grant and the books!
Sincerely,
Mike Serres

Slip into a Good Book
Hudlow is proud to announce that we will continue with our tradition of Slip into a Good Book. Every year, we ask our community for donations for slippers and books for every one of our students. This year is no exception. Please reach out to us if you are interested in helping. We will have our Slipper and book collection box ready on Monday October 30th, for donations.
