Kia ora e te whanau,

This week we received the official data from the Ministry of Education which records our students’ attendance in term one this year. These statistics show a drop in attendance for our students and I would like to raise this issue with you as whanau because it is such a key problem for our students who are not coming to school regularly.

“Regular attendance” at school is deemed 90% attendance according to NZ and international educational guidelines.

Look at the statement from Hon Tracy Martin provided by the government - “Research shows that every day away from school can affect results. For example, students attending 95% of days in Year 10 later get an average of 75 credits at Level 3 – more than enough to achieve the qualification. For students attending Year 10 for 85% of the time, only about half go on to achieve NCEA Level 3.”

Mondays / Fridays and the last day of term are key “absence” dates which indicate a pattern of disengagement with school, rather than illness or justified absence. It is vital we don’t let our students form poor habits and excuse themselves from school on these days.

We cannot let our students miss out on their educational opportunities in this way. When students reach a point of non-attendance whereby, they disengage with learning, it is hard to get them back on track. Their levels of attainment and achievement in their subjects drops to the point where they just cannot catch up. We know that sometimes our students will be genuinely unable to attend school through illness, but these times should be the notable exceptions.

For those of you whose students are regular attendees at school, keep up the habits and routines that are supporting them in this. It is great to have them actively engaged and I hope they enjoy sharing the content of their school day with you when they get home.

If you are struggling to engage your student with coming to school, please get in touch and let us work together to ensure that they have the best possible opportunity for achievement and success through attendance. Your whanau ako teacher, whanau teacher and your year level dean will support and help your student to re-engage with learning, but we need to work together as whanau and kura to give our rangatahi the learning they need to have the purposeful and fulfilling futures that we want for them.

Week 4 of this term (24-28th of May) is the 17th Annual Trident PET FOOD Appeal Week and “Dress like an Animal” Day

This year we have an INTERHOUSE competition to see if Buck, Kara, Ngata or Pomare donates the most food (in kilograms). Students are encouraged to bring non-perishable PUPPY and KITTEN food to school and label the food with their house (eg. B, K, P, N). Students can bring the food to room A16 (Miss Botha’s room) during whanau time or any other time during the week.

On Thursday (27th of May) we have a ‘Dress like an Animal’ day. (Gold coin donation). Students are encouraged to dress like animals (ears, horns, tails, masks, animal suits, etc.) for the day. During lunchtime on Thursday we will have a sausage sizzle opposite the Wharenui.

For the past 16 years the annual Pet Food Appeal week has been a huge success at Trident. We trust that the students will enjoy this week and that Trident will once again donate much needed food and money to the Kawerau and Whakatane SPCA’s, OSCA in Opotiki, Harmony and Hope Animal Rescue in Whakatane and All Paws Count in Murupara.

Wear a Pink Shirt to school to support our anti-bullying stance.

Well done to our Prefects who are organising this event, alongside the Year 10 Social Studies classes, some of which are studying anti-bully for NCEA credits this term. Pink Shirt Day highlights the issue of bullying and how we can be more empathetic to each other.

All students met with their elective teachers today and will be bringing permission slips home if they are in an elective that takes them out of school. Electives this term are for 2 hours and they run every second week. This is so that students have the opportunity to make the most of this time

On Thursday the 13th May, Ethan McConnell, Georgia Hurunui and myself met with Taylor Ulufonua from Cafe 4U. Ms Benge arranged this meeting to allow us the opportunity of interviewing an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur is someone who takes the risk in pursuing their business ventures, and works for themselves. With us all keen on becoming self-made in the future, we eagerly shared our own visions and asked for Taylors advice.

He made it clear that success is derived from doing a lot of research and reading. Suggesting the book from Robert Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad For Teens, to better understand the ins and outs of money.

Taylor also encouraged us to listen to podcasts. You don’t always have time to sit down and read, but often there are moments where you can put your headphones in to listen to advice. Keeping in tune with the current news, learning more about the industries you’re interested in, personal stories about getting started - anything! Make your time well spent.

Another key to business success is finding the need. Find a problem in the community you’re in, and come up with a solution that you’re able to do. Taylor told us that when jumping into the deep end with an idea, failure is quite likely. Failure is a part of life, and you have got to be prepared to fail. Rather than dwelling on it, just doing your best to learn from it and move forward is the way to go.

Overall, we all had a great korero with Taylor. It definitely inspired me to start planning some ideas for the future. I’d highly suggest a chat with Ms Benge if you’re wanting to get into the world of entrepreneurship. By Ashley Pye

On Friday 14th May the students from Special Education travelled to Rotorua to visit the Library. The Multi Sensory Room has just been updated and completed prior to our visit. We are planning to develop our own sensory room at SEC and found the ideas at the Rotorua Library Multi Sensory Room were inspirational. The outdoor activity area also provided multi sensory interactions for the public. The students are creating a wish list and evaluating items that they would like included here at THS.

On Wednesday our tasting panel were presented with a range of hot food options. These options were evaluated by a range of students and staff. The provider will use this valuable feedback to inform their planning for our hot meals starting in Week 7. Thank you to our staff and students for their valuable time and feedback!

Once again Trident is well represented in Volleyball selections. Congratulations to Trident students: Catriona Jobe, Reyce Kururangi, Shakira McDonald, Lukas Buchan, Casey Cousins, Maia Bellas, Levi Hunt, Misha Ruri, Tiare Chase, Tinirau Brady, Maxwell Wharewera, Campbell Forsyth, Kani Paniora, Phoenix Pugh, Salem Tuaeu, Te Huaki Kurei who have been selected for Aotearoa Maori Poirewa - NZ Maori Volleyball teams. Well done to all!

The wet weather cleared just in time to hold the annual BOP / Mid Island Cross Country event at Waipuna Park on Monday, with the top runners from schools around the Bay of Plenty competing against each other in some well contested races. Illness and injury on the day meant the Trident team was hit hard however they still did the school proud.

The Year 9 girls and boys completed the 3km course and the Junior boys the 4km course.

Lilly Collombert was first up in the Year 9 girls and dug in to finish in 27th place with a time of 16:49.

Trident had a strong team of 3 boys in the Year 9 race. Oliver Christie was the top placed Trident athlete coming 3rd in 11 minutes flat. He was closely followed by his brother Xavier Christie who finished in 6th place in 11:19. Joseph finished in 12th place in a time of 12:02.

Ollie Frederickson ran in the Junior boys race and came 6th in a time of 16:05.

Everyone deserves huge credit for their performance.

The Junior Boys Football Team came up against Omokoroa All Stars, an Academy team from Tauranga who had been undefeated for well over two years. The Trident boys got off to a blistering start and made all the early running, being especially dangerous on the counter attack. The game was hotly contested end to end, however, Trident ran out fully deserved 2-1 winners.

The first game of the season for the boys was on Thursday evening after having a bye in the first round. Firstly a huge thanks to Brent Jones for driving out to the Lions Hutt to collect 4 players who were at camp and Matt Frederickson for taking them back out after the game.

Trident started out strong missing a few early chances to score thanks to John Paul College’s strong goal keeper. Trident kept up strong defence and kept John Paul College out of the circle most of the first quarter meaning no score from either team. In the second quarter Trident were on fire, first year hockey player Harry Jones incorporated a bit of his cricket experience into the game scoring our first goal! Not to be stopped Harry within the space of 5 minutes had scored another two great shots to secure his first hat trick of the season giving Trident the lead at half time 3-0.

In the second half Trident came out strong again lots of work and opportunities made by our mid field players and some good opportunities for our Year 9s to experience some action on the turf. Trident conceded one goal in this quarter.

The last quarter again some good chances by Trident still remaining dominant and then we were finally rewarded with a fantastic goal from Bradley Rothwell – final score 4-1 to Trident.

Well done to the Year 9s Derek Esterhuizen, Luke Rothwell (who stepped up to go in goal for the second half of the game) Zek Ford, Ben Cleghorn, Ethan McConnell and Xavier Christie, great first game boys you all gave 100% and created some great play.

The Trident Hockey Girls' were lucky to have the opportunity to participate in a training session with Lizzy Horlock, a former Captain of the Womens Black Sticks on Monday night. She put them through their paces with intense hockey drills focusing on playing together as a unit. They all loved it and were motivated to learn from the best and were able to transfer those skills learnt on Monday to their home game against Western Heights High School on Tuesday. They came away with a 5 -1 win with goals scored by Demi Oliver, Kyra Maui, Marina Sirkku and Shannon Toone who scored 2 goals for her team. Well done girls!

Seven of our students attended the Kayaking Nationals event last week, Friday to Sunday after being postponed in February. The students came back with 2 Individual Medals and 10 Team Medals which included 2 National Titles.

Michael Esterhuizen took Gold, Silver and Bronze in the U18 and Open Men's K4 Events with a National Title in the U18 K4 500 Distance.

Caitlyn Esterhuizen, Jess Cleghorn, Hannah Baxter and Eva Fuller got two Silver Medals in the U16 K4 Events. Eva also got Bronze in the 200 K1 Event and Jess got a Bronze in the 500 K1 Event.

Derek Esterhuizen and Ollie Fredericksen took Gold, Silver and 2 Bronze Medals in their K4 and K2 events in the U14 age group with a National Title in the U14 K4 500 Distance.

They also got 2nd place in the club relay event. Congratulations on a very successful event to all our Kayakers! Credit for on water photos to @georgiasphotos.

On Monday 17 May, the Junior Boys' A team were the first Trident team to play. The boys played well, executing offence while trying different positions out on the floor. They managed to hit open shots and maintained defensive pressure to secure the win 42-22.

Trident Junior Girls' were up against the Tarawera Seniors. The game was a little more physical than previous games but the girls adjusted well. The team managed to keep a strong defence structure creating turn over opportunities and finishing at the hoop.

The Junior Boys' Development team had an intense game against Opotiki Juniors. The score remained close between the 2 teams with a half time score of 15-16 to Opotiki. Both teams came out strong in the second half but Opotiki managed to take the game 28-25.

Trident Senior Development had a good game against Ruatoki. Both teams looked like they enjoyed themselves on the court with Trident coming away with a comfortable win.

The Senior Girls' took on Whakatane High School in a physical but good game. Trident Girls are coming together well gaining a 42-23 win.

The Senior Boys' A team played Opotiki Seniors. Throughout the game Trident had a good defence forcing a lot of turnovers with their full court press followed by quick fast break points. The boys were strong with getting rebounds at both ends of the court where they turned them into easy fast breaks and solid putbacks. Overall they maintained a good pace and ended the night beating Opotiki 57-31.

Congratulations to our 8 Trident students who successfully competed in this fantastic event in Waihi last weekend. A lot of podium finishes from Trident, well done to all!
