Message from Dr. Correa
Dear D56 Families,
The safety of our students, staff, and visitors remains our top priority each day. Even though we can’t share specific information about our emergency plans or safety measures -- not wanting to compromise their effectiveness -- you should know that at each school, our teachers, staff and students are involved in practice drills, planned in conjunction with law enforcement, so everyone knows what steps to take in an emergency. We have District and School Level Incident Command Structures in place. We are fortunate to have collaborative relationships with all law enforcement agencies surrounding our district, mainly the Gurnee Police Department. They know our school safety plans and we continuously review and update them as deemed necessary. Our School Resource Officer is a direct line to law enforcement agencies in any emergency.
As a result of all the feedback and suggestions from the entire school community over the last couple of weeks, we are instituting an anonymous tip line located on our website. The system’s purpose is to report threats or problems observed in or near our schools. The tip line will be located on the D56 website and each school’s website. The system is another tool for students, parents, and community members to report a problem in a safe space using online messaging.
Additionally, we will be reviewing our protocols and resource allocation to evaluate what we could do differently to enhance safety in our schools. This work will be done in partnership with stakeholder groups involving staff, parents, and community members, including law enforcement agencies. More information will be provided on this process later this spring. We believe this is a step in the right direction as many of you have expressed a high interest in partnering with us to create a safer learning environment for all.
We know that our children are the most important treasure in our community. As a community, we value your assistance in helping us do everything we can to keep our schools safe.
Thank you for your continued engagement and support.

Spaulding School staff spent a week teaching students about five disabilities that people may have. Every day featured a different disability. Monday: Vision Impairment/Blindness; Tuesday: Traumatic Brain Injury; Wednesday: Sensory Processing Disorder; Thursday: Rett Syndrome; and Friday: Spina Bifida. Students and staff were encouraged to wear a different color of clothing each day to highlight the disability. Pictured here is the Spaulding School Respect Week Committee.
