MPVA Weekly Update
May 13 - 17, 2024
Dear Parents and Students,
A mother is your first friend, your best friend, your forever friend. Even after they are gone, their lessons, their wisdom, and their love lives on through their children and often through others whose lives they touched. To be a mother is not an act of biology, it is a behavior. It is a verb, not a noun. It is how all the wonderful women in our lives "mother" us throughout our life's ups and downs.
My mother will always remain the most influential person in my life. My mother never had the benefit of an education at all (neither of my parents did), yet she was wise beyond my own comprehension, and she knew that it would be through the power of education that her children would be lifted out of the cycle of poverty that our family was trapped in. She was right. Mothers are always right. She taught her children work ethic, compassion, respect, and a moral obligation to help lift others up when they could.
I loved my mother very much and still miss her dearly, but I also take much comfort in knowing how proud she was of me and the work that I do. That comfort and the pride she had in me elevates my joy on my best days and helps sustain me on my most difficult ones. My mother is the reason I have such a deep respect for all parents who have earned and hold the honor of being called, "Mother", or in my case, "Mom". She is also the reason I am an educator. I carry all her lessons, and her love, inside of me and will always continue to work towards those ideals she held dearly and those beliefs she knew to be true.
I know what wonderful and amazing mothers we have in our MPVA community because I have the rare honor and privilege of having them share their children with me, and with our school community. When I see all these wonderfully talented, funny, goofy, kind, respectful, (sometimes moody), intelligent young people walking our halls (sometimes running), gracing our stage, competing on our fields and courts, adding to their knowledge and skills in our classrooms, I know they have someone behind the scenes that is guiding them with their wisdom, their words, and their love and it is almost always their mother.
Thank you to all the mothers who share their treasures with us and who have have placed their trust and confidence in our school community to help raise their children right. I hope you all have a beautiful day!
Finally, a huge thank you to our PTO (full of those wonderful mothers I'm talking about) who made Teacher Appreciation Week a very special one for our staff. We loved all the "mothering" you gave to us all last week!
Respectfully,
Mr. Sarabia
Academics are the mind of our school. Athletics are the heart of our school. Arts are the soul of our school. #WeAreMPVA
MPVA Updates
GT Expo
Our GT students represented MPVA at this year’s HISD G/T Expo on Thursday, May 9th. Eighth graders Sophia Sorena, Margaret Hogue and Delaney Moore highlighted the importance of libraries in schools. Seventh graders Brynn Cabe and Eliana Gottlieb cautioned on the hazards of speeding in school zones. Sixth grader Mars Daniels educated audiences on Orca Matrilines. We are so proud of each one of our finalists as they shared their knowledge and expertise on their respective projects! WAY TO GO, Greyhounds!!!!
MPVA Traffic Maps
Attached below are MPVA Traffic Maps (English and Spanish) to help you navigate parking and traffic around our school. This year we have had two accidents involving MPVA students and cars. That is two students too many.
One of the accidents happened at the corner of Manhattan and Wigton and the other at the intersection between Manhattan and Willowbend.
Please help us keep all our students safe by following all posted signage around our school and using the attached maps to guide you with parking options.
We have been actively seeking Crossing Guard help since the Fall and were able to acquire help in the afternoon at the corner of Manhattan and Wigton. I also want to thank PTO member, Mr. LeBlanc, who has been helping us at that intersection all year during the morning and afternoon commutes. Some who have seen him day in and day out may think he works for HISD, however, he does this voluntarily and his help has been invaluable. Please let me know if we have any other parents who would like to help.
Finally, I want to caution parents against asking their children to meet them on the other side of Willowbend. That is a high-traffic and high-speed intersection. Finding areas within the neighborhood to designate as a pickup spot makes more sense. Many parents do this and it works.
Thank you all in advance for helping us take care of our students. #ItTakesAVillage.
