Keynote Speaker
Join us for our keynote speaker, Jordan Gillman. As a child, Jordan Gillman, the creator of Mirror Face, would stand in front of a mirror, trying to see the person he wanted to become. He found the process of self-validation a very difficult one as both a boy and a young adult. Later in life, he came to realize the importance of self-acceptance and wrote a rough draft of a book that conveyed a self-love message his inner child needed to hear. It was a book that introduced him to his true self. Jordan now shares this important message with others with the hope to help children and their caregivers meet their truth.
Workshops
On Saturday, January 28, 2023, there will be workshops with fantastic speakers.
- The Mirror Face Challenge - In this session, the author of Mirror Face will discuss how he has reconnected to his inner child through the creation of Mirror Face and why the Mirror Face Challenge was created to spark a global self love movement. Jordan will share his S.E.L.F outline (social emotional learning fundamentals) and will offer daily self love practices that can be used to foster self love within yourself, your home, and your classroom. Finally, Jordan will offer ways for you to stand behind this self love movement through participation in the Mirror Face Challenge, a global movement designed to spark love through self love.
- I Taught SEL, Now What?: Leveraging the SEL Competencies to Plan Meaningful Academic Learning Experiences - Purposeful planning lies at the heart of creating the conditions for all students to succeed. In this session, we will discuss the implications of the CASEL 5 in our lesson planning, view sample lessons that start with the CCSS and incorporate SEL "I can" statements, and explore common student learning objectives through an SEL lens.
- Educational Implications of Coordinated Neuropsychological Development of Reading, Social, and Emotional Functioning - There are increasing calls for the need to support the literacy development of the whole child by considering also their social-emotional development and cultural context. Rooted in a synthesis of available research from neuroscience, psychology, and education, here I will present evidence of and implications for the fact that literacy and social-emotional development are coordinated, individually variable, dynamic and sensitive to contextual influences. Helping children to organize their brains and minds for literacy, and ultimately helping to address persistent inequities in students' literacy development, requires the use of evidence-based, culturally inclusive, emotionally responsive and developmental appropriate instructional practices.
CRLP Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Module Lessons - Picture books are a powerful part of literacy instruction, but they can also help teachers promote social and emotional learning (SEL). Participants in this interactive session will explore ways to use picture books to strengthen students’ relationship skills (CASEL 5) and promote empathy, kindness, caring, and cooperation in the classroom and beyond. The session will highlight literacy instructional strategies, classroom activity ideas, and suggestions for supporting students’ social-emotional learning beyond the classroom.
To Teach Me Reach Me - Culturally responsive and social emotional learning are not separate instructional delivery opportunities. Culturally responsive and social emotional considerations should exist in all our lessons. In this session will discuss how to embed the CASEL competencies while teaching through a culturally responsive lens.
Valuing the connection between Music and Literature - Throughout the world both music and literacy are essential elements to our lives, culture and everyday experiences. We tend to seek them out separately, instead of collaboratively. During our time together, let’s explore the soothing combination of literature and music, where our hearts, minds and souls can find rejuvenation, peace, joy, understanding, purpose and energy — In the words of William Congreve, poet and playwright —“Music soothes the heart”. Come discover how the combination of music and literacy strengthens our social and emotional development.
Social and Emotional Learning 101 - As a lifelong educator, I believe SEL is at the heart of all learning and growth. Our students and educators need and deserve the knowledge and life-transforming power of the CASEL competencies. To quote bell hooks, “As a classroom community, our capacity to generate excitement is deeply affected by our interest in one another, in hearing one another’s voices, in recognizing one another’s presence.” This is how education can be the practice of freedom for ourselves, for our students, and our communities.
