Message from the Principals
Thank you to the PTO for hosting a fun-filled Ice Cream Social this past week. Our scoopers included many faces from South Row as well as our dedicated parents.
We wrap up our Fall benchmark assessment month today and will use the data to best address the needs of all learners. Our teams are working hard to design lessons and interventions that will support our learners. We have an additional reading interventionist this year allowing us to expand our level of support to even more students. We are grateful to the district for funding this position.
Monday kicks off our Fall Reading Challenge which highlights reading at home. Please see below for more information and how you can help your child participate.
Respectfully,
Terri and Jayson =)

Reminders and Updates
Fall into Reading Challenge: In an effort increase reading at home we will kick off a reading challenge on Monday September 30th. Teachers will be provided with a page of leaf templates on colored paper to send home with each student. Each leaf will represent 20 minutes of reading and include a spot for the student's name and the date. Students and families will be asked to cut the leaves out each time they read for 20 minutes and send them in to school. We will add the leaves to a bulletin board in the main lobby to highlight our students efforts with reading at home. There will be a challenge amongst grade levels to see which grade level reads for the most minutes. The winning grade level will decide on the reward for their students. In order to include all levels of readers, families can read to or with a student as well as students reading independently. We will wrap up the challenge on October 11th.
Visiting the Building: If you are volunteering and/or visiting the building, please expect to present your photo ID. The Chelmsford Public School District has implemented a new visitor management and screening service at every school building. The system is called Visitor Aware, and it is designed to ensure that only safe visitors are allowed access to our buildings. Visitor Aware provides an additional layer of security for your children by validating the identities of anyone entering the premises, determining if they are a potential threat, and keeping accurate records of all school visits.
Visitors are required to have a valid state issued identification card, such as a driver’s license, to check in to ensure the accuracy of the information provided. Valid identification is also used to ensure that the person checking in is the same as the ID holder. The identification card must be non-expired and contain a picture of the visitor.
Snacks: Please remember to send your child in with a snack. The school has a very limited supply that gets depleted quickly and it is not to every students liking.
Volunteering: If you are interested in volunteering in our school (should an opportunity present itself) please be sure to contact Mrs. O'Neill or Mrs. Sepe to make an appointment to fill out a CORI form. All volunteers must have a CORI on file to volunteer.
Nurses Corner
Dear South Row Families,
Unfortunately, we are already seeing some cases of strep throat. Please let me know if your student tests positive for strep for tracking purposes. This information helps guide our decisions regarding increased cleaning and sanitation practices in affected classrooms.
The CDC has great information on strep, you can find the link to the full article here. I have summarized the key points below.
What causes strep throat?
Strep throat is an infection in the throat and tonsils caused by bacteria called group A Streptococcus (group A strep).
What are the symptoms?
Common symptoms may include:
Fever
Pain when swallowing
Sore throat that can start very quickly and may look red
Red and swollen tonsils
White patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils
Tiny, red spots on the roof of the mouth, called petechiae (pronounced pi-TEE-kee-eye)
Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck
Small Children (usually kindergarten, 1st grade) may experience:
Headache
Stomach pain
Nausea or vomiting
Rash (scarlet fever)
How does it spread?
Group A strep bacteria often live in the nose and throat. People who are infected spread the bacteria by talking, coughing, or sneezing, which creates respiratory droplets that contain the bacteria.
People can get sick if they:
Breathe in respiratory droplets that contain the bacteria
Touch something with those droplets on it and then touch their mouth or nose
Drink from the same glass or eat from the same plate as a person infected with group A strep bacteria
How can I prevent my child from getting strep?
The best way to keep from getting or spreading group A strep is to wash your hands often. This is especially important after coughing or sneezing and before preparing foods or eating.
To prevent group A strep infections, you should:
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Put your used tissue in the wastebasket.
Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands, if you don’t have a tissue.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available.
You should also wash glasses, utensils, and plates after someone who is sick uses them. These items are safe for others to use once washed.
How is strep throat treated?
Doctors treat strep throat with antibiotics. Benefits of antibiotics include:
Decreasing how long someone is sick
Decreasing symptoms (feeling better)
Preventing the bacteria from spreading to others
Preventing serious complications like rheumatic fever
Someone with strep throat should start feeling better in just a day or two after starting antibiotics. Call the doctor if you or your child are not feeling better after taking antibiotics for 48 hours.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Nurse V.
