Principals message
Dear Friendly Hill Families,
As we welcome the month of March, we are excited to celebrate the growth and hard work of our students! It’s a busy time of year, and we are so proud of the effort our students are putting into their learning every day.
"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily difference we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee."
- Marian Wright Edelman, activist
Celebrating Women’s History Month
March is Women's History Month, and we are honoring the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. In our classrooms, students are learning about inspiring women from various fields, and we encourage you to continue these conversations at home. It’s a great opportunity to discuss strong role models who have shaped our world.
Developing Strong Work Habits
Our students have been working incredibly hard to develop strong work habits that will serve them throughout their lives. We are focused on helping them build perseverance and resilience as they face challenges. This month, we are emphasizing the importance of doing hard things and the incredible growth that happens when we push through difficulties. Students are making great strides in developing their ability to focus, stay organized, and complete tasks with determination.
Brain Growth Through Strong Skills
We are also focusing on key areas of learning to help grow our students' brains and skills:
- Close Reading: Our students are diving deep into texts, improving their reading comprehension by closely examining key details and understanding the underlying themes.
- Decoding & Foundational Reading Skills: A strong foundation in reading begins with mastering decoding skills. Our students are working hard to break down words and use phonics and word patterns to build fluency and confidence in reading.
- Independent Writing: We are encouraging students to take ownership of their writing, working on expressing their ideas clearly and confidently.
- Math Facts: Building fluency in math facts is essential, and our students are doing an amazing job of mastering them with automaticity, which is helping them to feel more confident and capable.
Celebrating Literacy: Read Across America Week
As part of our commitment to fostering a love of reading, we will be celebrating Read Across America Week later this month. It’s a wonderful opportunity to engage students in fun reading activities, while also encouraging them to explore new genres and develop a passion for books. We invite families to participate and celebrate literacy together!
Upcoming Science Fair
Our Science Fair is just around the corner, and students are eagerly preparing their projects. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their curiosity and creativity in the sciences. We can’t wait to see all the amazing experiments and discoveries that our students have been working on.
Family Association - Bingo for Books
Don’t miss out on the Family Association’s Bingo for Books event! It’s a fun, family-friendly night where you can win books for your child’s personal library. We hope to see you there for a night of fun and community building!
Thank you for your continued support of our school and students. We look forward to all the exciting things happening this month and to working together to ensure our students continue to grow and succeed.
In partnership,
Ms. Roach
Mrs. Stoermer's Class
Mrs. Taylor's Class
Mrs. Wilcox's and Mrs. Cooper's Class
The 6th grade classes are set for an exciting on-campus field trip on March 7th, where they will delve into the fascinating world of ancient civilizations. Mr. Soares, a seasoned expert in ancient crafts, will be visiting the school to demonstrate the intricate art of creating clay pots—a skill that has been honed over centuries. Students will not only witness the transformation of raw clay into beautiful pottery but will also have the unique opportunity to get hands-on experience and craft their own pots. Additionally, Mr. Soares will bring in a collection of artifacts, offering students a tangible connection to the past and enhancing their understanding of ancient cultures. This immersive experience promises to ignite curiosity and provide a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity and artistry of ancient peoples.
