ROO News for October 07-11, 2024
Our Principal Who We DEARLY Love!!!π€ππ€
Hey Roos,
We had a KANGAMAZING start to the school year, and it is hard to believe the end of the first nine weeks October 10th. Be on the lookout for report cards after we return from the fall break. One of our Kangaroos family values is SUCCESS, and we provide tutoring during Power Hour, and the KHS Homework room is available to students every day during the week before and after school as well as some Saturdays. Take a look at our flyer for more information.
The month of October is full of events. Hispanic Heritage Month will continue these next few weeks, and October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. Relationships is also one of our KHS values, and Iβm excited to share with you that we will host one of the best relationship building events for parents/guardians on October 29th and 30th. The event is called Walk a Mile in My Shoes Day. On Walk a Mile in My Shoes Day, you get to join your student at school and attend his/her classes. Thatβs right β YOU get the opportunity to spend a day with your child to see what it is like for them to be a student at Killeen High School. I have done this event many times, and it is a great way for you to have a deeper understanding of what your student experiences daily. Be on the lookout for more information on our school website, social media, emails, and text messages in the upcoming weeks!
We have a fall break coming up October 14th-18th; however, we will still have campus extra-curricular activities happening during that week. I want to wish all our students and staff the best as they continue to work hard during that week and compete. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. Let's go BIG ROOS!
Hugs,
Kara Trevino

Hey ROOS,
The first nine-weeks are winding down. This is a great time to see how students respond to a CKH activity and/or revisit the activity to possibly guide them towards thinking about their end of the nine week assessments or grades. Take a look at this CKH activity! π§π€

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the significant impact of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. Their presence predates colonization and has shaped the nation since the Revolutionary War. Key treaties expanded U.S. territories and incorporated Hispanic Americans. Today, over 60 million Latinos make up 18.9% of the population, contributing to the economy and enriching the nation as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, and more.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, U.S. Representative
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician and activist serving since 2019 as the U.S. representative for New York's 14th Congressional District. Since a very early age, she has focused on equitable access to education for all. As a child, an impression on her came from when she noticed differences with opportunities in the way she was treated versus her cousins who remained in the Bronx.
Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman and Latina to serve in Congress. During an impressionable internship with the late Senator Ted Kennedy, gave her a personal and up-close view on devastating effects on families who were being separated by ICE, so this led her to work with and organize Latinx youth in the Bronx and across the country. Today, she advocates for fully federal funding towards educational programs and often states, "Every American should have a stable, dignified housing, health care, and education" (Sampson, 2024). It's great to know Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez during K.H.S. Hispanic Heritage Month!

Ms. Elvira Jefferson, K.H.S. English Teacher
We are very proud to highlight Ms. Elvira Jefferson during Hispanic Heritage month. She has been in education for 14 years and currently teaches English I on our campus. She started a career in Social Work and Child Protective Services, as a Conservator. She had the role of being the one "on-call" to investigate families, sometimes by herself which seemed extremely dangerous to her. This led her to completing an alternative certification educational program and becoming a substitute teacher. From these experiences and teaching at a local middle school, Elvira fell in love with students, especially when a light bulb went off due to them comprehending the daily lessons; however, the biggest impact came from her building relationships with all her students.
In addition, Elvira's love of teaching stemmed from her living in the same type of demographics as how she grew up and that is why she always wanted to teach in the same type of area. She stated, " The students would cling to her as though she was like their mom, and they were her babies". This was her WHY in teaching, as a substitute teacher, aide, and now a real teacher! Lastly, Elvira taught through the COVID pandemic, never taking a break, because she felt as though her students needed her the most during this time. Elvira loves Teaching! We APPLAUD Ms. Elvira Jefferson as she shines during K.H.S. Hispanic Heritage Month!
