News From the Classrooms
Preschool
During June, preschoolers will continue to learn about people in our community. They will learn about doctors, dentists, and construction workers. We will also be practicing for our End of the Year Celebration which will take place on Friday, June 14th. The children will perform songs on stage to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the school year!
Throughout June, we will review our letters, sounds, numbers, and shapes. We want our little ones that are going to Kindergarten to have a strong foundation! The preschoolers continue to learn how important it is to be kind, caring and helpful. We loved watching each child learn and grow this year!
Kindergarten
Kindergarteners will be spending the remaining days of school practicing and reviewing all of the irregular words and sound spelling patterns that they have learned over the course of the year. Additionally, they will begin to be exposed to the CVCE spelling pattern. Read aloud stories will be all about animals and their habitats. Students will get a good sense of what features that different habitats have, as well as features that the animals have in order to survive in that habitat.
For Math, students will be taking all their learned knowledge and applying it into making their own addition and subtraction stories, as well as focus heavily on fluency of adding and subtracting within 5 and 10. Fluency practice will be in the form of fun partner games over our last days together.
First Grade
First graders are having a fabulous end to the school year! Students are wrapping up their reading module with stories of those that inspire us and those that “dare to dream”! They will read and write about how thinking in new ways can help us to solve problems.
In math, students have just learned about shapes and dividing them into equal parts of halves and fourths. They have also worked with clocks and telling time to the hour and half hour. They will end the year with our money unit by studying coins and their values.
In science, students grew our lima bean plants and made observations of the plant life cycle. In social studies, we will wrap up the year with ways that people show pride in their country. All our students are also always working on CARES expectations and preparing ourselves to be second graders! Great work, first grade learners!
Second Grade
The second-grade students at Woodland School continue to be hard at work as the school year begins to wind down. The final ELA module will begin soon. During this module, students will dig deeper into the genres of realistic fiction, fantasy, autobiography, and legends. They will explore these genres through the work of author Tomie dePaola as part of our author study. In writing, students will finish writing their last personal narrative of the year and review opinion writing.
In math, students are working on Unit 9: Putting It All Together. In this unit, students review their understanding from throughout the year to cap off major work and fluency goals of the year.
In social studies, students are working on the final few standards of the year. These standards involve interviewing a family member and researching a country of their heritage.
Second grade students are also looking forward to their visit to Powder Mill School on June 7. They will have the chance to tour the school, meet with administration and third-grade teachers, and ask questions about Powder Mill.

End of the Year Ice Cream Party
We will be having an end of the year Ice Cream Truck event at Woodland School coming up on June 13th and we wanted to share this information in advance with families. We are very appreciative of the generosity from the Batchelor family who donated the funds to sponsor this event. Nurse Carellas has reviewed the items that will be available considering the nutrition/dietary restrictions for all students at Woodland.
We are looking forward to be able to celebrate the end of the year with an ice cream treat with our classmates and teachers!
Family Literacy and Math Carnival
On May 23rd, Woodland School hosted an incredible Family Literacy and Math Carnival, bringing together students, families, and the community for an evening of educational fun and excitement. We are immensely grateful to the Southwick Police Department and Fire Department, PAWS PTO, and the Southwick children's librarian for their enthusiastic participation and support.
The event featured a variety of engaging activities designed to spark a love for reading and math in our students. Families enjoyed interactive games, educational booths, and hands-on activities that made learning a joyous experience. At the end of the evening, students left with grab bags filled with literacy and math materials and activities, ensuring the fun and learning continued at home.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making the Family Literacy and Math Carnival a memorable success. Your dedication to our students' education and well-being is deeply appreciated!
