Norwich Middle School 2024 Retirements
Mrs. Cheryl Welch
“No one can be a replacement for another person. That is why farewells are always difficult.” -Matsuri Hino
As the 2023-2024 School Year draws to a close, we say farewell to our beloved Ms. Welch, who will be retiring after serving in the Norwich City School District for 25 years. Many students have benefited from the love Ms. Welch has shown them over her time here, whether she gave them food, clothing, empathy, an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or simply a hug. Her passion for kids has always been the definition of what Ms. Welch is all about. In addition, she had a natural knack for hooking kids into the ancient worlds and teaching them about social studies in a way that they loved and will remember forever. Professionally, Ms. Welch has always been a key team player on her 6th grade team, and she will be missed immensely. Best wishes in your next chapter Ms. Welch!
Mrs. Betsy Campbell
Betsy Campbell, AKA the SEUSS whisperer, found her place planning a hands-on adventure night for years for Stanford Gibson, and Perry Browne students and their families to participate in while including MS/HS students and NCSD staff members in the volunteer and organizational process. Dr.Seuss themed events were a staple of many families memoires at Gibson school, from oobleck, Yertle the Turtle, Hop on Pop obstacle course, etc… examples
Betsy is also known to have a “Green Thumb”! Betsy Created a beautiful, welcoming garden (on her own time) outside of Stanford Gibson. She organized fellow gardeners and staff to donate different plants, flowers, ground cover and spent endless hours creating, and then maintaining the garden for years… She blessed her classroom / office with several plants, and often gave away her baby spider plants.
Betsy's first teaching gig was abroad in Germany teaching first grade. Once she came back to the states she was hired by the Cinncinnatis School District as a reading teacher, or teaching 1st grade. Eventually Betsy blessed Norwich City School In 2003 and became a key leader on the Stanford Gibson Reading Team. Most of her years were spent at Primary aged level. She helped hundreds of Norwich children learn how to read. Betsy then transitioned for a Couple more years down to Perry Browne Intermediate school. Eventually she was reunited back to Gibson School for a one year stay. Norwich Middle School was lucky to have Betsy join our team for her final year in the education field. She has always been a huge asset wherever she works. Betsy has a way of making everyone around her better. She brings joy and puts a smile on faces. She is a selfless person that always puts others before herself. She is always thinking; and praying for others in need.
Roles you might have seen Betsy in over the years in Norwich City School: AIS reading Interventionist / Co-Teacher / recess monitor / crossing guard / traffic control / tutor /Breakfast server / Milk delivery and many more unofficial titles.
Betsy loved to help foster the love and passion for reading for both students, and staff district-wide!
Supporting Reluctant Readers
Reading is a critical part of academic success. But not every student is a good reader, or loves to read. If your child isn’t an enthusiastic reader, here’s how you can help.
* Show your child that reading is a way to pursue personal interests. Regularly take your child to the library to help him/her find books on topics that are of interest to him/her.
* Have family reading time—20 minutes when everyone in the family reads something of interest: books, magazines, comic books, etc.
* Read a book together. Take turns reading, switching off pages or chapters.
2024-2025 School Year
The 2024-2025 School Year starts on September 5th - we are very excited about the upcoming school year, and all the amazing learning that will happen.
Help your student build Health Habits
It’s never too early for your child to develop healthy habits. Think about the following as they relate to your child.
* Is your child getting the recommended 9-12 hours of sleep a night?
* Does your child have healthy eating habits? u Do you do outdoor activities with your child, such as hiking, playing sports, or taking walks?
* Does your child engage in fun physical activity on a regular basis?
If you answered “no” to any of the above, not to worry. Work on small daily changes to build healthier habits into your child’s life. Here are a few ideas.
Institute a “no technology rule” an hour before bedtime so your child has an easier time falling asleep.
Have nutritious food and snacks available, and look for ways to involve your child in physical activities.
Go for a short family walk on warm evenings, or turn on the music and have a dance party.
