IB Career-related Programme coming to SVHS in 2020-2021
Anti-vaping PSA Contest
Anti-vaping PSA Contest
Montgomery County students in Grades 6–12 are encouraged to create an original video public service announcement (PSA) as part of the county’s anti-vaping campaign. Co-sponsored by MCPS and Healthy Montgomery, the county’s community health improvement program, the goal of the contest is to promote awareness of the dangers of vaping (the use of e-cigarettes).
The submission deadline is Friday, Dec. 20.
Students can enter the contest on their own or as a group; however, students may only participate in one entry. The winning PSAs will be announced in February and cash prizes will be given to the first place, second place and third place entries.
Find out more about entry rules and submission instructions on the Healthy Montgomery website.
The anti-vaping, tobacco prevention campaign is a collaboration of the County’s Department of Health and Human Services, Montgomery County Public Schools and Healthy Montgomery. The contest is made possible by the support of Trinity Health, Holy Cross Health and the Institute for Public Health Innovation through Trinity Health’s Transforming Communities Initiative.

A Note from Counseling Services
Counselors will be going into 10th grade classes this week to work on the 4-year Course Planner. Students will share with parents their course selections and build their plan through graduation on Naviance and share this with their parents. Parents who need access to Naviance can contact their student’s counselor or Mrs. Maloney in the College/Career Center.
Stevenson, Washington College, Goucher, Hood, Notre Dame of Maryland are just a few colleges with no application fee when applying online. All schools accept some form of waiver, not just for financial (such as an alumni waiver) so ask teacher if they attended and can get a waiver for you. Popular schools such as Towson and Frostburg offer these. See Mrs. Maloney for waiver assistance. Also, when using the Common Application and Coalition Application, in the profile section, if you select you are eligible for free/reduced lunch or from the list of eligible programs, you will automatically receive an application fee waiver for any school you complete the application for on the Common or Coalition App.
Seniors, your next college application deadlines are December 15 (only 1 week!) and Dec. 30. Recommendation and test scores need at least 2 weeks’ notice to meet these deadlines. Work with your counselor and Mrs. Maloney to be on time with getting your information to the colleges.
FAFSA deadline for many Maryland State colleges and universities is January 1. Have you completed the FAFSA? It’s not too late. If you need help, the Montgomery College website, www.montgomerycollege.edu has some fantastic videos to help you. Look under “financial aid, FAFSA” . Also the Career Center and Mrs. Maloney has many resources. No social security number, no problem. Complete the MSFAA through the MDCaps program under the Maryland Higher Education Commission. See your counselor or Mrs. Maloney for details.
Checkout the Scholarship files in the College and Career Center! Come take a look and see what might fit your needs academically or by interest. Remember, scholarship searching and essay writing is like a part-time job; you have to put time in in order to get paid. Here are a few: Legacy of Life Scholarship, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority- Pearls of Hope Scholarship, the B. Davis Scholarship, and the DMV Scholarships for students going to Montgomery College and Dreamers.
Dual Enrollment, taking college classes in high school for college credit! Spring 2020 Semester enrollment is now open to juniors and seniors; late Dec deadline but don’t wait. Mr. Yarmus in Counseling Services is your guy if you have questions.
Applications for ACES will close December 20th for rising juniors. Want to join a program that helps with college readiness and success? Free resources for SAT/ACT and essay writing, plus college visits and college application assistance and financial aid resources? See Mr. Daryn Moore (240-676-2018) in the Career Center if you have questions about the application or ACES.
Parents, you can always apply for the MCPS Free/Reduced lunch program online, not just at the beginning of the school year. Qualifying allows students to also apply for fee waivers for free SAT/ACT tests as well as reduced cost to the AP and IB testing. As seniors, students who qualify usually receive PELL Grants when completing the FAFSA for college tuition and possibly more state and federal grants for college. Sign up today to see if you qualify at MySchoolApps.com This form must be completed each year.
