March Edition
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL VAN
Greetings Salemwood Families!
Happy March! 20 days until Spring!! Yippee! We are thankful for all your continued support as we venture on with the school year! Lots of happenings in the coming weeks and months! On Monday, March 7, 2022, the School Committee will be meeting to make a decision about wearing masks in schools....we will keep you posted as to what their decision is. You are always welcome to join the School Committee meetings either in person or via Zoom to voice your opinions, concerns, etc.
At the end of March into May, Grade 3-8 will be participating in MCAS ELA, Math and Science (Gr 5 & 8). Please help us by making sure our students get their much needed sleep the night before and a nice breakfast (we can provide that at school!) so that they are able to focus and do their very best!
We have been providing bottled water for our students during COVID times because our water fountains cannot be used per the Board of Health. We want to be conscientious of our environment so if you are able to send your child in with a refillable water bottle (ideally have their name on it) so that they can refill their bottle at our filtered water bubblers that would be greatly appreciated! We are hoping to get more refillable water bottles for sale but in the meantime any assistance would be helpful!
As always, please make sure to send your child in to school on time each day. If they are not feeling well, please help us by keeping them at home. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by the school or email me at vhuynh@maldenps.org. Thank you for entrusting us with your child...we are honored to be a part of their and your lives!

MCAS TESTING TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS
- Check the calendar below for your student's scheduled tests by grade. Most students will take 2 tests, Math and ELA. Students in grades 5 & 8 will also take the Science MCAS.
- Be sure students get a good night's sleep: Make sure your student is able to get a good night sleep before their test. This will help them concentrate and focus during the test.
- Start the day with breakfast. Encourage students to eat breakfast at home, or grab a breakfast here at the school. Either way, encourage them to fuel up before the test.
- Charge their Chromebook: For students in grades 5-8 who take their device home, be sure they charge their Chromebook the night before testing,
- Dress comfortably: Being comfortable during a test helps remove any distractions.
- Send them to school with a positive message: Help start their day with a positive outlook on their test day.
- Remind them to use their time wisely and use the strategies they learning in class: Students can take the whole school day to test, so they do not need to rush to finish. Remind them to read the directions carefully and to use what they've learned in class to help them during test time.

GET TO KNOW YOUR SALEMWOOD STAFF
Each month I'd like to spot-light Salemwood Staff to help our community members get connected. This month, I am happy to introduce our Nursing staff. They work incredible hard to support the health and well being of our students.
PATRICIA TRAMONDOZZI, DIRECTOR OF NURSING K-12, MSN, BSN, RN
I have been a school nurse in Malden Public Schools for almost 26 years, and I am currently the Director of Nursing. I’m happy to say 17 of those years was spent working in the Nurse’s Office at Salemwood. I’ve wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember — being a school nurse has been all that I hoped it would be and more. Over the years, I’ve cared for many students and staff. I’ve watched students grow up and become young adults. It’s so special to have students remember you years later. Some of the staff I worked with at Salemwood have even become a second family to me. Even though I’m the Director now, Salemwood will always have my heart.

CHRISTINE MORRIS, CMA
Hello Salemwood community! I started with Malden in 2007. At the time, Malden had never really had CMA's and most RN's worked alone. I was hired a month after getting my certificate from Salter School and spent 11 years at Ferryway, before being transferred to Salemwood. I come from a culinary background, over 20 years as a cook, then becoming a Chef. I have been incredibly lucky to have worked for the last 14 years, with the most talented and dedicated nurses in the business
