Featured Stories
Halloween Stories Come to Life
Mrs. Manning’s class brought their Halloween narratives to life this month! Students began by visualizing and creating a story map, which guided them as they wrote their own unique stories. For October's Family STEM project, students worked with their families to create a setting for their stories at home. While many students made haunted houses, others built football fields, McDonald’s, jails, forests, and even graveyards. On Halloween, students dressed as the main character from their story and presented their narratives to the class. Students discovered how transitions and adjectives help bring their stories to life. They had so much fun with this project that many students are already asking to create Christmas stories next!
North Students Exercise their Right to Vote with Door Decorating Content
In alignment with the recent election, North Elementary gave students a hands-on opportunity to practice exercising their right to vote! Each grade level selected a book with an election or voting theme, and students worked together to decorate their classroom doors based on the book they read.
Kindergarten read Pete the Cat for Class President, first graders read Kid for President, and second grade read Monster Needs Your Vote.
Yesterday, students had the chance to walk through the halls, see the decorated doors, and then “cast” their votes in a ballot box for their favorite door. It was great to see how seriously students took this fun yet educational experience, learning an important life skill in the process. They waited so patiently for their turns and were truly excited to fill out their ballots!
The winning classroom in each grade level will receive an ice cream treat!

October Students of the Month-POSITIVITY
We learned what positivity meant and how having a positive attitude can make a difference for us at school and in life! This is a photo of those children that went above and beyond showing a positive attitude and were positive to their friends. We were happy to celebrate them.
Classroom Lessons
Kindergarten learned about the Yellow Zone from the Zones of Regulation. Sometimes they might feel worried, frustrated, silly or excited. They practiced calming down using the Five Finger Breathing technique. Ask your child to show you!
First graders listened to the Crankenstein story and discussed things that make them cranky or upset. They made a list of 5 things that make them happy and learned to Think Happy Thoughts when they feel cranky or are in the Blue Zone.
Our second graders read the story The Boy with Big, Big Feelings. We discussed how everyone has big feelings sometimes and it is normal. The students painted a project matching the illustrator's technique of crayon resist, using watercolor paints over crayon. We added pictures of things we love or things that make us happy. Mrs. Hamm reminded the kids that they are in charge of how their day goes. And if they are having a bad day, or are in the Blue Zone, they can Think Happy Thoughts to get through the day or to turn their day around.
