Tumuaki Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
Time just keeps flying by this term, and it's nearly the end already. Looking around the school this week, it does seem that we have a lot of tired faces, as the winter weather, winter sports, and winter sickness seem to be encroaching on us. It's at this time in the term where I often remind students (and myself) that it's important to be kind to one another. We get tired, and our fuse (teachers & adults included) often becomes shorter. We need to take that time out and remind ourselves to take a breather before reacting or doing anything we regret. Flocktimes recently have been spent reviewing some of our school mottos, such as M.O.F.O (Mess Up, Own It, Fix It, Move On) and THINK Before we Speak (see the poster below).
Our school Board has been busy this term, and our overall goal is to continue to grow and improve our school. This term has seen us reviewing our Health & Safety practices, alongside Emergency Procedures, First Aid, and EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom). Thanks to everyone who signed the Transport Agreement and sent Miss Todd a photo of your WOF; this has helped a lot.
ERO (Education Review Office) are coming next week, Tuesday & Wednesday. We are excited to welcome them into our school and show off all the great learning that happens in our classrooms. As always, we are excited to receive their feedback and learn the next steps for our school's continued improvement.
Read on to hear about all the exciting things we have planned for the end of the term and a big Good Luck to all those competing in the Canterbury Cross Country.
Noho ora mai,
Phoebe Todd

What is Matariki?
Matariki is the Māori New Year, celebrated in New Zealand when the Matariki star cluster (also known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters) becomes visible in the night sky, typically in mid-to-late June. This marks the start of the Māori New Year and is a time for reflection, celebration, and looking ahead to the future.
Matariki is an important cultural tradition in New Zealand that has been celebrated for generations. During this time, Māori communities come together to honor the maramataka (Māori lunar calendar), remember those who have passed, and plan for the year ahead. Traditional Matariki celebrations often include feasting, sharing stories, and observing the Matariki stars.
What's been happening at school
Canterbury Museum Visit
Recently the Canterbury Museum came to visit and shared lots of information about Dinosaurs and Godwanaland. Read on to see how we applied it to our learning.
PlayHouse Performance
Weka Class were lucky enough to head to Omihi School to watch the performance of The Reluctant Dragon. We had a great time learning that 'not all Dragons are bad - some like to sing and dance.' Thanks heaps to Mrs Charles for helping with transport and taking us to the play!
Inquiry Learning
Kea Class
Recently Kea Class have been asking the Question:
Are the 4 birds on our school logo the 'best fit for our school and our area?'
This ties into our learning about the local wildlife in our area. We recently had a debate in class and discussed our different reasons for different birds to be placed on our school logo. We would love to share our ideas and opinions at our Matariki Celebration Day, and provide whānau the opportunity to have your say and share your ideas about what birds you think are the best fit for our school.
Weka Class
Weka class have been learning all about Dinosaurs, check out our Dinosaur Art Work.
Karmani - Dinosaurs lived in New Zealand. The moa had big legs.
Bridie - Some dinosaurs had feathers on their skin. They all had scaly skin.
Rayan - Reptiles ate eggs. Some dinosaurs were meat eaters. They are called carnivores.
Breanna - Dinosaurs had straight legs. Plesiosaurs were swimming reptiles. Pterodactyls were flying reptiles.
Millie - Once Australia and New Zealand were joined together. But, millions of years ago Australia and New Zealand broke up very slowly. New Zealand had four dinosaurs. There was the Pterodactyl, the Theropod, the Parasaurolophus, the Titanasaur and possibly the Kilosaurus.
Khanoa - We don't have dinosaurs any more because when the meteorite hit Earth, all of the animals died. There was lots of dirt and dust, which made the Earth go dark. Earth cooled down and the plants didn't grow. 70% of life on Earth died.
Class Discussion about Ancient New Zealand
New Zealand used to be more like Northern Queensland.
It was warmer and the sea temperature was possibly 25 degrees all year round.
We had crocodiles, penguins, flamingoes, 1m tall parrots and turtles (to name a few).
The vegetation was mostly Beech trees and dense rugged forest.
Mr Kemp's Art
Yesterday, we were lucky to have Mr Kemp share his art with us. He explained how the process of layering takes a long time, he has been working on this piece for over 4 years. He also shared his knowledge of the small town of Carcasonne, in the south of France which has inspired his artwork.
It was fascinating listening to Mr Kemp.
Kea Class Camp
Kea Class are getting excited for their winter camp - happening in the first week of next term in Stavely. Keep an eye out for the first newsletter next term as it is going to full of all the exciting things we got up to!
Fortnightly Maths Challenge
Which one doesn't belong?
This is based on the learning all teachers and students have been doing, having discussions at home using maths language is a great way to continue to build maths competencies. There are no right or wrong answers for this photo- but share it at home and come up with as many possible answers for which number doesn't belong. Please note the picture attached is Weka Class turning their results into a bar graph.
