Safety and Security
Safety and Security Information: We will be conducting our regular fire drills and lockdown drills throughout the school year. As a reminder, the district installed blue strobe lights on the exterior of every school building. The blue lights signal that the school is in a lockdown. If you are dropping your child off and the lights are on, that is a signal not to enter the building because we are in a lockdown. When we have a lockdown drill, parents will be notified during the drill. If you have been made aware that it is a drill, please wait in the parking lot until the lights turn off (signaling that we are out of lockdown). If you have not been made aware that there is a drill, please exit the campus.
UPK-12 Off-site Evacuation Drills
On Thursday, October 10th, students and staff at the elementary, middle, and high schools will practice an off-site evacuation. This drill will consist of all students and staff evacuating the building and walking down Clinton Street to the designated evacuation sites. High school students and staff will proceed to the Avon Fire House and elementary and middle school students and staff will proceed to St. Agnes. Please Note: If your child requires transportation to the evacuation site due to a medical condition, he/she will be transported by bus from the school to the evacuation site. Our nurses, Nicole Montesano (ES nurse) and Katie Conroy (the MS/HS Nurse), will communicate this information to the Director of Transportation. If your child is walking to the evacuation site, please make sure he/she is wearing appropriate footwear (sneakers) and clothing suitable for cooler temperatures.
Once students arrive at the evacuation sites, students will assemble with their class and teachers will take attendance. After attendance is taken and then communicated to the appropriate school personnel, staff and students will then be directed to either walk (majority of students and staff) or be transported by bus back to the school. This off-site evacuation drill is anticipated to take about one hour. If you have any questions or concerns about the off-site evacuation drill, please contact your child’s building principal.

UPK-4 Information
Attendance: Being on time and present is the most significant indicator for student success. Students should be in school at 8:50 a.m. So far, students have been doing a great job! Our attendance team has been monitoring daily attendance and creating support plans when necessary.
Arrival: Our arrival loop can get congested with parent drop-offs. We noticed when parents exit their cars and escort students to the front door, other cars attempt to drive around them, but it gets tricky. We have plenty of adults out front for supervision. Parents can get kiddos out of the car and adults can walk them to the door to not cause a delay in moving out of the parking lot. Let us help you with getting kids to their classes!
Fire Prevention Week (October 6th-12th, 2024): Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored Fire Prevention Week. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the 2024 theme for Fire Prevention Week, "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” On Tuesday, October 8th, members of the Village and East Avon Fire Departments visited the elementary school to speak to UPK-4 students about fire safety at home. Special thanks to Cindy Kellen for coordinating the fire prevention assembly for our students.

Early College High School
Avon High School is excited to welcome the first cohort of students for the Early College High School program. Avon CSD has a partnership with Genesee Community College and was awarded a grant through the New York State Education Department. The grant, the New York State Smart Scholars Early College High School or NYS-SS ECHS grant, is designed to support students starting with the 2024-2025 ninth graders having access to graduate with a New York State high school diploma and an associate’s degree.
Through the grant, Avon will pay for Genesee Community College credits for our students, starting with the Class of 2028. Avon currently offers two pathways for college credit. One pathway will be a liberal arts general studies pathway. The other pathway focuses on computer information science. Students who participate in the ECHS program can earn a minimum of 24 college credits and up to 60 transferable college credits.
Some classes will be offered at Avon. Some classes will be at GCC. Avon CSD will provide the transportation to GCC. Avon CSD and GCC are collaborating to offer a rewarding college experience. Participating in the ECHS program is a great opportunity for your child to increase their college credits while saving families tuition. Students will also be supported with transitioning to a four-year institute of higher education.
Questions should be directed to the Avon High School School Counselors, Amanda Palmer (116-2455, ext. 1729) and Liz Cooke-Megliore (226-2455, ext. 1727) or Christina Ecklund (226-2455, ext. 1641), Director of Academic Programs.
