WSSDA Board Self-Assessment
The Pasco School Board recently completed the WSSDA Self-Assessment Survey, a tool designed to evaluate and improve board governance with a focus on student learning. During a study session, they reviewed the survey results and identified the board’s areas of strength and key areas for growth.
Celebrating Student Achievement – Emerson Elementary School
Mira Gobel, Assistant Superintendent of Schools & Social Emotional Learning, presented a board report recognizing Emerson Elementary School for their achievement in closing the gap for English learners during the 2021-2022 school year and closing the gap for one or more student groups during the 2022-2023 school year.
The school was honored by the Washington School Recognition Program, a collaboration between the State Board of Education (SBE), the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight Accountability Committee (EOGOAC).
Introducing ParentSquare
Anna Tensmeyer, Director of Public Affairs, provided an overview of ParentSquare, the district’s new communication tool being implemented during the 2024-2025 school year. ParentSquare is replacing Blackboard, our current mass communication tool, which is being phased out. After evaluating alternatives and receiving recommendations from neighboring districts, ParentSquare was selected as the most suitable option.
ParentSquare will serve as the district's primary communication tool, handling school and district updates, bus route information, emergency alerts, and eventually some teacher communications. The platform is user-friendly, offering a variety of tools that are intuitive and easy for teachers to learn.
The next steps include training staff, sending initial communications, and thoroughly testing and monitoring the system to ensure its effectiveness.
Earn More & Learn More – An Innovative Approach to Fail to Fill
Dr. Bob Smart, Executive Director of Employee Services, updated the board on the district's Earn More & Learn More campaign, launched during the 2023-2024 school year to address the challenge of "fail to fills" in the district.
Dr. Smart outlined the innovative strategies used in the campaign, including the introduction of a tiered pay schedule aimed at improving substitute teacher recruitment and coverage. This initiative was developed in response to feedback gathered through the Superintendent’s Listening Tour, board comments, and input from building principals.
Dr. Smart also shared plans for phase 2 of the campaign and provided an update on efforts to enhance data systems for better planning and decision-making.
