District News from the Fairview Park City Schools

November 16, 2022
A Message from Superintendent Keith Ahearn
We are pleased to bring you the November edition of the Fairview Park City Schools Fast Five Newsletter. Below you will find articles that highlight the great things happening in our schools. Thank you for taking the time to read about the accomplishments of our outstanding students and staff.
As we prepare to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with our friends and family it only seems fitting that I take this opportunity to thank the voters of Fairview Park for their support of Issue 7, a renewal levy that appeared on the November 8 ballot. The success of Issue 7 allows us to maintain the current funding of our schools, and to continue to provide the outstanding programs and services our stakeholders have come to expect.
We are grateful for this show of support by the community and we are committed to fiscal accountability and will continue to work hard to show our value to the community in everything we do.
I hope that you find time to relax, reflect, and renew yourselves in the company of friends and family during the Thanksgiving holiday as you prepare for the hectic holiday season just around the corner.
Respectfully,
Keith Ahearn
FHS students learn what it's like to be a teacher with Educators Rising
What better way to learn about a career in education than to work each day with teachers?
That’s the unique opportunity Fairview High School students have with Educators Rising, a one-year class offered to students interested in the education profession. The course is open to all students at FHS.
“Often we hear kids say they’d love to be a teacher,” Meghan Hignite, FHS history teacher, and teacher of the Educators Rising program explained. “But, then it falls by the wayside because they don’t actually learn about the reality of it, or they don’t get the opportunity to tutor other kids. The ultimate goal is to give them a nice picture of what the job is all about and if they feel that’s the right route for them.”
Smoothies On The Go blends fun and learning to help students grow
Thanks to Smoothies on the Go, some pretty sweet lessons are being taught to students.
Smoothies on the Go is a weekly program and student business that creates delicious frozen smoothies at Gilles-Sweet Elementary. Now in its fifth year, the program continues to grow while teaching students important lessons through a hands-on, engaging learning experience.
“I always wanted to start a student-run business with my class to get them more into using the skills that we are teaching in classroom,” Kerry Sheldon, an intervention specialist at Gilles-Sweet expressed. “In the future, they’re going to have jobs. Smoothies on the Go is helping with their future employment and getting them ready for what’s expected when you have a job.”
Each Friday, members of the Smoothies on the Go crew meet in the staff lounge to prepare their orders. They set up individual stations, review the smoothie recipes, measure their ingredients, create all the orders, work as a team, and wash, dry, and put away what they have used. Once completed, the crew then hand-delivers the smoothies to their customers in the building.
For the fourth consecutive season, FHS sends athlete to state cross-country meet
Imagine being so good at something that you’re one of the best in the state after just two years. That’s just the case with Fairview High School senior Ben Myers.
Myers is one of the latest highly successful cross-country runners from Fairview High School. Over the past four seasons, runners from this Warriors program competed for a state title in Columbus. In fact, the Warriors have been represented five out of the last eight years at the state cross-country meet - in 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021, and now 2022.
Myers currently owns the fastest-known time in school history, recording a 15:52 twice this season: once at the Legends Invitational in Cortland, OH and the other at the Great Lakes Conference Championship.
Tri-M Music Honor Society creates a stronger music community for district
Service to others is an important part of the Fairview High School experience. The Tri-M Music Honor Society builds on that tradition while creating a tight-knit community for high school music students.
According to their website, Tri-M Music Honor Society focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy. Across the globe, there are more than 2,100 chapters involving over 84,000 students. Students contribute more than 750,000 hours of service to their school and local community each year through Tri-M.
“Students can become members by applying through a formal application process,” Hillery Needham, director of orchestras for the Fairview Park City Schools explained. “Students admitted into the organization display exemplary character, musicianship, and good grades.”
