TVUSD Multilingual Program
TVUSD Program for Multilingual Students
Step 1: Home Language Survey
When you enroll your student and indicate that he/she speaks a language other than English, we administer the initial ELPAC test (English Language Proficiency Assessment of California) to determine the student's level of English proficiency.
Step 2: English Language Development
If a student is determined to be a novice or intermediate level English learner (as determined by the ELPAC test) the student's teacher will provide daily English language development (ELD). This is done in a small group focused on the students' language needs . The teacher will also teach using strategies to make the content understandable for all students. Students also collaborate on many learning projects allowing them to practice English with their peers as role models.
Step 3: Yearly ELPAC Test
Every spring, students take the summative ELPAC test to chart their progress in English reading, writing, listening and speaking. Parents receive the results in their annual parent notification letter in August. If parents would like to know the student's current ELPAC level, they can ask the teacher or request it at a school ELAC meeting.
ELAC- English Learner Advisory Committee
Families can attend the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) at their school to learn more about this process, the classes and support their students receive and to provide feedback and suggestions for the school regarding the students' education.
