1st grade

Math: This week scholars will review all 1st grade math standards and take the I-Ready math assessment.

ELA: This week scholars will review all 1st grade ELA/reading math standards in preparation for next week's ELA/reading assessment.

Social Studies Scholars will learn about careers in nursing and teaching in observance of national nursing and teaching week.

Last Friday 1st grade scholars, visited the Page Farms Strawberry Patch!

Third grade

Math: We will review skills already taught to prepare for the EOGs.

• Operations and Algebraic Thinking

• Number and Operations in Base Ten

• Number and Operations – Fractions

• Measurement and Data, Geometry

ELA: We will review standards already taught to prepare for the EOGs.

• RI.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
• RI.3.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
• RI.3.3: Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.
• RI.3.4: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.
• RI.3.8: Describe how the author connects ideas between sentences and paragraphs to support specific points in a text.

Social Studies: Scholars will learn about ancient civilizations from around the world and learn how they developed.

Science: This week scholars have learned about the three states of matter. Next week they will continue learning about the physical and chemical properties of the matter.

We encourage scholars to continue to do the following:

• Do I-Ready My Path (Reading and Math) for at least 30 minutes daily

• Read a book independently for at least 20 minutes daily

• Practice their multiplication and division facts

Fourth grade

Math: We have finished up our end of year iReady Diagnostic, I am so impressed with the growth I’ve seen and the determination. For the remainder of the year we will review for the EOG.

Social Studies: Scholars finished learning about the improvements of Transportation and Communication in North Carolina. Next, students will be introduced to World 1 and the Great Depression.

Fifth grade

Math: We have finished up our end of year iReady Diagnostic, I am so impressed with the growth I’ve seen and the determination. For the remainder of the year we will review for the EOG.

Social Studies: Scholars learned about Westward U.S. growth and expansion: The Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, The Erie Canal, and Pioneers. Next week will continue to examine U.S expansion through The Mexican American War, Gadsden Purchase, and the Texas Annexation.

Science: Scholars have learned about Thermal energy and how thermal energy is transferred by radiations, conduction and convection. Next week they will continue learning about how heating and cooling can change the properties of materials.

Sixth grade

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our unit on Rome by taking a look at Rome’s contributions to the world and/or their legacies. Students will complete a station activity that connects with each of the basic components of a civilization. We will also start our final unit for the school year, China.

End of Grade Testing is coming up at the end of the month for all students in Grades 3-8. The schedule for EOG testing is as follows:

Monday May 29th: No School, Memorial Day

Tuesday May 30th: 3rd Reading, 4th Reading, 5th Reading

Wednesday May 31st: 6th Reading, 7th Reading, 8th Reading

Thursday June 1st: 3rd Math, 4th Math, 5th Math

Friday June 2nd: 6th Math, 7th Math, 8th Math, Math I

Monday June 5th: 5th Science, 8th Science, 3rd Re-test

Tuesday June 6th: Make-up Testing

Wednesday June 7th: Make-up Testing

Thursday June 8th: Make-up Testing

Friday June 9th: Last Day of School

We will be having a school-wide book swap on Thursday, May 25th for elementary scholars and on Friday, May 26th for middle school scholars. All scholars will have the opportunity to visit our book swap during the school day and everyone will be able to choose 3 pre-loved books to take home. Additionally, scholars are invited to bring gently used books from home to donate. Scholars will receive an additional book for every book that they donate (limit 10).

The PTA is currently searching for board members for the 2023-2024 school year. All positions require NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE, just a passion for helping our school community. We aim to be welcoming and inclusive and believe that many hands make light work. We hope that you’ll consider joining us, even if you haven’t participated in the PTA before.

We are excited to offer Camp Kestrel: a FREE Summer Day Camp experience available to all Kestrel Heights Scholars! This includes all newly enrolled scholars for the 2023-24 school year.

Daily activities will empower our Camp Kestrel campers to Sharpen Academic Knowledge with daily Adventures in Reading, Demonstrate Creative Expression with daily Arts and Crafts Activities, and Expand Leadership Abilities with daily Sports and Games.

Camp Kestrel will be held from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday each week from Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 28.
