Message from the John Glenn Interim Principal
Dear John Glenn Parents/Guardians, Students, and Staff:
As we near the end of another academic year, I am writing to talk about something that may be affecting your seniors: senioritis. Senioritis is a term used to describe a decline in motivation and academic performance that can occur among students in their final year of high school or college as they anticipate graduation.
While it's natural for seniors to feel a sense of relief and excitement as they approach the end of their high school journey, it's important to remind them that their responsibilities as students have not yet concluded. The final stretch of senior year is crucial for maintaining academic focus and ensuring a smooth transition to their post-secondary plans, whether that involves college, vocational training, or entering the workforce.
Senioritis can manifest in various ways, including decreased attendance, lower grades, incomplete assignments, and a general lack of engagement in school-related activities. These behaviors can have consequences not only for their academic success but also for their overall preparedness for the next phase of their lives.
As parents/guardians, your support and encouragement play a vital role in helping your child navigate this challenging period. Here are some strategies you can implement at home to help combat senioritis:
Maintain open communication: Keep the lines of communication open with your child regarding their academic progress and any challenges they may be facing. Offer guidance and support without placing undue pressure on them.
Set realistic goals: Help your child set realistic goals for the remainder of the school year and break them down into manageable steps. Celebrate their achievements along the way to keep them motivated.
Encourage time management: Assist your child in developing effective time management skills to balance their academic responsibilities with other commitments and activities.
Emphasize the importance of finishing strong: Remind your child that their academic performance in their final year can impact their future opportunities, including college admissions, scholarships, and job prospects.
Provide positive reinforcement: Acknowledge and praise your child's efforts and accomplishments to boost their confidence and morale.
Seek additional support if needed: If you notice persistent signs of senioritis or academic struggles, don't hesitate to reach out to their teachers, school counselors, or other support services for assistance.
By working together as a school community and with your support at home, we can help our seniors overcome senioritis and finish their high school journey on a positive note. Thank you for your continued partnership in nurturing the academic and personal growth of our students.
Warm regards,
Scott Kelley

Attendance
Regular attendance is crucial for your child's academic success. Please make every effort to ensure your child attends school on time every day and stays throughout the whole day. Consistent attendance throughout the school day allows your child to engage in learning and maximize their educational opportunities fully.
Illness: If your child is not feeling well and cannot attend school, please notify us immediately. Students who are ill should not attend school to prevent the spread of illness to others.
Excused Absences: We understand that there may be instances when your child needs to be absent due to illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or other legitimate reasons. Please notify the school in advance whenever possible to classify the absence as excused.
Unexcused Absences: Unexcused absences negatively impact your child's education. Absences without valid reasons will be considered unexcused, and appropriate actions may be taken per district policy.
Timely reporting of absences helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures that your child's absence is properly documented. Absences must be reported within 24 hours.
There are two convenient methods for reporting your child's absence to facilitate efficient communication and accurate attendance records.
You can notify your child's school through the dedicated attendance line. Please leave a detailed message stating your child's name, grade, and reason for absence.
You can report absences directly through MiStar, our secure online portal for student information. MiStar provides a user-friendly interface that allows you to submit absences.
Thank you for your ongoing support in creating a positive and productive learning environment for all our students.
