JV news from the residents point of view
Happy 2025!!
Elections Matter
The city will be having elections in May for 2 council positions and the mayor. If you would like to run, please use the link below. Turn in your request by this Friday, February 14, 2025, by hand before 4 P.M.
Our city needs fiscally responsible people on council, and it would be great to see more than one person on the ballot for each position.
The Pool - how did we get here?
As you know, the pool bond failed twice because the city did not do its due diligence or have a specific plan for improvements/re-build. The city also only had one bid. The city presented a "concept" for a pool that "may" cost up to $10.1 Million. After some research, our team at JVCCC put some thoughts together that we would like to share.
- JV made repairs to our pool during 2021 and 2022
In December 2023, the council was informed by the city that the repairs needed would cost up to $1Million.
The city established a bond committee.
The city sought out a non-local premier pool company by the name of Councilman-Hunsaker who originally drew up 3 plans/concepts featuring 2 separate pools.
The committee asked for drawings that kept the original Z shape pool based on many residents' requests and comments at the meetings.
More plans/concepts were drawn up having the Z shape with additional lap lanes.
Despite no known citizen comment supporting the 2-pool concept or the $10.1 Million price tag, 5 of the 7 committee members voted for the highest cost concept.
The bond DID NOT pass so the city now has plans to destroy the original pool with your tax dollars even though citizens want a pool, they just don't think our tax dollars should go for a $10.1 Million pool. It is too expensive to build and maintain!
What is reasonable for the pool?
Our team recently learned of a pool being built off I10 (Wilchester area). Fully planned and funded by an HOA. Here is what they did.
- Our pool and theirs is about the same age; however, the Wilchester's pool was in far worse shape than our pool. They have a lap pool, rock pool, baby pool, bathroom/guard building.
- Their HOA started researching long term solutions in Spring 2023.
- They did "band-aide fixes" and "emergency repairs" to stay open for 2024.
- They came up with one firm concept design with preliminary cost estimates ($2.2 Million from meeting with 6 area contractors with experience in similar pool complexes).
- They presented an engineered drawing before their public meetings and outreach in Spring 2024.
- Citizens voted August 26, 2024, and approved the plan presented.
- They started construction in 2025, after the 2024 holidays.
- Their pool will be back open for summer 2025!
