Kaleo Olson's Basketball Update
The 8th grade boys of River Oak beat Eagle Peak on Wednesday night, with a score of 75-37. Eagle Peak came out red hot in the first quarter, hitting 3 three point shots. Contributing to a 13-6 lead over the Firebirds. The Firebirds then settled down and were able to tie the game. Ending the first quarter with a score of 15-15. In the second quarter, The Firebirds turned up the intensity and outscored the Eagles 23-7. “I think that the full court press helped us to transition some turnovers for some easy buckets and get back in the game and then take the lead from there.” Coach Rebekah Martinez added. In addition to this strong defensive effort, River Oak was able to shoot accurately from the three point and free throw lines. River Oak held onto their lead and Eagle Peak never really had a chance to get back in the game. Cheyo Minz-Kammer who led the team in scoring with 25 points said “Our energy really shifted, that really helped us turn things around.” Zach Martinez, who had 23 points, said “I think our intensity was just a little slow at the beginning. We weren't fired up and then once we started making shots and lay-ups, we were able to get the lead.” Geo Gibbs who had 15 points added, “Once you get the adrenaline going you’re unstoppable.”
