Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I hope everyone is well. The month of October is a very busy month for our school with the Student Goal Setting Conference week, the Scholastic Book Fair, our report to the School Board, and two of our favorite community building events at the end of this month: Día De Los Muertos and Trunk or Treat. A big Shout Out to Maestras Aida and Jennifer for organizing a fun culminating end of unit field trip to the Pumpkin Patch. It was a very warm day, but everyone had a lot of FUN. Enjoy this Photo Album of the field trip put together by Instructional Assistant Katy Sandoval(and other photos below). I also want to SHOUT OUT Parent Volunteer Elizabeth Flegel for all the time and effort it took publishing this year's School Directory--MUCHAS GRACIAS!
Student Goal Setting Conferences
A big change district wide this year is that Parent Teacher Conferences will be earlier (October 23-27; ALL Super Minimum Days with Early Dismissal: TK:11:30am; Kindergarten 11:35; 1st-5th grades at 11:45am) which is prior to the end of the first Trimester and before Report Cards are sent home. Teachers will be communicating with parents about the schedule sign ups soon(some have already started). The plan is for students to be more actively involved and reflective at the student goal setting parent/teacher conferences. In Superintendent Baker's most recent newsletter to the community, he wrote about the change in the format for conferences this year:
RCSD’s new Student Goal Setting Conference format is in place of what we’ve previously referred to as Parent-Teacher Conferences that are typically held further into fall. As the school district begins this shift in the focus of conferences from “reporting” to “goal setting”, the first steps are for students to select a grade level standard for their focus this fall, and discuss it with their teacher and family at the October conference. The progress report that will be sent home in November will include an update on strides made toward that specific goal. Though there will be many similarities to our prior conference experiences in this new format, such as receiving student work samples and viewing informational data such as i-Ready assessment results, there are also a few key shifts in a Student Goal Setting Conference vs a traditional conference.
Goal Setting at the TK-5 Level:
Student and family participation is highly encouraged at the elementary level. Families will be asked to think about what goals they have in mind for their student, such as hopes for student growth or what they are most excited about this school year. Most of the conference conversation will involve students discussing their thoughts and reflections on their learning, focusing at first on just one goal. Because not all students may be accustomed to taking such an active role in conferences, student input can be either through discussion or via examples of their work.Teachers will provide additional information about the student’s current progress and strengths. The conference will cover the work that will take place in the classroom and also suggestions for how the family can support the student in reaching the goal at home.
Scholastic Book Fair!!
Join us for one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year – the Scholastic Bookfair! This year’s book fair will take place during conference week: October 23 - 28th at the library. Enjoy this special book shopping experience with your children before or after the teachers conference meetings and also at our Día de Los Muertos event.
Be on the lookout for the scholastic book fair flyers in your child’s backpack next week. You will see posters all around the school with QR codes to set up eWallets.
Shopping times:
All students will visit with their classroom at a scheduled time during the week.
TK & K students are welcome to shop, with a parent, before or after the bell.
2nd - 5th graders are welcome to shop during recess.
Please, see the Unidos website for shopping hours. Every dollar you spend will benefit our school directly (25% - 50% back in rewards). A few exciting book options recommend by Director Warren for our students: Principal’s Scholastic booklist.
We would love to have more volunteers join our Scholastic Bookfair team! The perks are obvious – seeing sparkling little shoppers fall in love with books and being part of the school community of learning. Sign up here
Día de los Muertos and Trunk or Treat Family Friendly Events

The event is free, but there will be yummy food for sale so bring your appetite! Please come!

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.
Here are the menus for August(you can use the same links for the September Menu which is not available yet):
