16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16

Love is such a frothy, misused word. We love everything from pizza to football, from our dog to our spouse. We love lots of things, and we love them in different ways. It would be improper to say, “I love my spouse like I love my dog.” It would be quite deadly for any man to ever make that comparison. Yet I love my dog, and I love my spouse. So what do we make of “Love?” It means so many different things. When Scripture states that “God is love,” what does that mean?

In the Bible, love is the essence of God’s character and the defining quality of his selfless, life-giving relationship with humanity. The Bible displays the meaning of love through stories, poetry, and discourse. Hebrew words such as khesed (loyal love) and ahavah (affectionate, caring love) teach us about specific qualities essential to the concept of real love. And Greek terms such as agápe (divine love) and philia (familial love) emphasize the unique ways that God, friends, family, and enemies can love one another. Beyond specific terms, the overarching story of the Bible ultimately describes love as the act of putting others before oneself—serving the interest and well-being of another.

The Bible, and more specifically the character of God in the Bible, shows us that love in it’s many forms is an action. Just saying I love something is meaningless, unless my love is proven through my actions. God loved the world in this way, that He gave His one and only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, that everyone that believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The action of God giving His Son meant suffering and death on the cross for Jesus. But that is God’s love. He is willing to die for you, that you have life, and have it abundantly.

And just like God’s love, human love should show itself through actions. Like in Deuteronomy 10:12-13, “What does the LORD your God ask of you, except to fear the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, to love him and serve him … and to keep his commands.” All of these actions are centered around love. If I’m not doing them, I don’t actually love God. I just say I do.

So people are to imitate God’s love, by showing love for others. This is the idea underneath the famous line: “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

And so at the end of the day, all of this is rooted in God’s own eternal love. “We love, because God first loved us.”

Let us pray,

Heavenly Father, not only do You say You love me, but You put Your love into action through Jesus Christ my Savior. Help me cherish Your love by enabling me to put my love into action for others. Amen

Friday, September 22nd will be an Early Dismissal Day. Students will be dismissed at 1:15 PM. Bus transportation will be provided.

Preschool students will follow their normal schedule.

The delivery date for the flowers will be Wednesday, September 27th. Flowers may be picked up between 3:30-5:30pm on the day of delivery. We are in need of a couple of eighth grade parents to assist with the delivery and organization of the flowers for pickup. Please contact the school office if you are able to help with the organization of the flowers on the day of delivery. If you have any questions please contact the school office.

Pickup will not begin until 3:30. Parking will not be available in the St. Peter's lot or in front of the school before 3:30 due to car and bus pickup.

During the weeks of September 18 and September 25 students in grades K-8 will be taking NWEA assessments.

NWEA is a set of tests called the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) that students in grades K-8 will be taking this fall and spring. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade take MAP for primary grades tests in Reading and Math, while students in grades 2-8 take MAP tests in Reading, Language Arts, and Math. These tests determine your child's instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the listed subject areas.

The faculty of Lutheran Central School would like to meet with every family to discuss the academic progress of your child. The opportunity to do so will take place during Parent-Teacher conferences on Tuesday, October 3rd and Wednesday, October 4th. The conferences will take place after school from 3:30-7:00 P.M. Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on these days for all students in Kindergarten - 8th grade.

Teachers will meet with each family for a maximum of 15 minutes to allow enough time to speak with every family. The second grade review of the first trimester and the results of the NWEA testing will be discussed during the conferences.

Scheduling forms for Parent-Teacher Conferences will be sent home early next week. Please return the form to your child's teacher on or before Friday, September 22nd. One form will need to be returned for each child. Once all of the forms have been returned, the teachers will schedule the date and time of the conference and send notification to the family. Families with more than one child will be scheduled into consecutive time slots.

The Lutheran Mission Federation is looking to raise $6,000 to help play these programs on the Louisville TV Stations. Let's help make this happen with our August Chapel Offerings!

What do vanilla wafers and icing have in common with moon phases? Ask the sixth grade science students and they can tell you!

The Brownstown Central Softball team will be hosting a softball camp for girls in grades K-5. The camp will be held at the Brownstown softball fields, behind the elementary school, the week of October 2-5 and we will use Friday if necessary for the rain makeup date. The camp will run from 4-5:30 every day and will focus on fielding, throwing, hitting, baserunning and proper sliding techniques.

The cost of the camp is $30, payment can be made in cash or check made out to "Brownstown Lady Braves Softball". Payment can be turned in on the first day of camp but we will need to know if you are planning to attend by September 11th so we will have time to get every player a shirt.
