From the Desk of Mr. Nelson
This is where early literacy starts - THANK YOU CEPS Teachers!
At our 4/19 Professional Development day last week Friday, all CEPS teachers with a responsibility for literacy instruction wrapped up two years' worth of intensive training in the science of reading. We have now had over 30 of our teachers go through the LETRS training (click link to see what this entails), which provides a deep understanding of how the early brain learns to read. Friday marked the last live training that our teachers will participate in, and the Zoom photo above is a brief snapshot to commemorate that. This is in addition to teachers participating in the required reading, online modules, quizzes, unit tests, and a comprehensive test that marks the official completion of this important training. How exciting to realize the commitment our teachers have to making sure kids learn to read. This is but one example of what occurs on these PD days...
...so THANK YOU ALSO to you, our FAMILIES, for working with our schedule to get PD in during the year.
Aly's Honky Tonk - Fundraiser for Cancer Research starts TOMORROW @ CEPS
Starting TOMORROW, we launch our annual fundraiser to raise money for the Aly Wolff Foundation for the Neuroendocrine Project at the UW Carbone Cancer Center. We are excited to continue our support of this local McFarland charity and the great work they do.
Please CLICK HERE for more information, and encourage your child to check the sidewalk, the floor of the car, or even their piggy bank for any "hidden treasure" (think, spare change) that they can bring in next week. No matter if it's a penny or more, it all helps! If students don't have spare change at home, we are encouraging all ways of participation...they can create a poster to hang in the school (CLICK HERE to print; turn in to Mr. Nelson in the main office), they can encourage their class community for filling the small piggy bank each class will get to work on filling together, etc. This is a schoolwide effort, and we are excited to see how much money we can raise working together as a school community.
In the past, we have had families wish to make a larger donation, which can be done by stopping right in our main office. More info, if you're interested: http://www.alyshonkytonkhustle.com/
🥧Last year, we had 24 teachers get pied in the face to celebrate raising over $2,400!🥧

CEPS Phy Ed Swim Unit is Back!
The CEPS PE swim unit is back for FIRST and SECOND graders! Students will be swimming for 5 days in a row. Week 1 runs from April 22-26 and Week 2 runs from April 29-May 3. You will receive a paper copy of your students' specific schedule soon if you have not already. They will be walking with their teachers and classmates to the high school pool. Parents/Guardians, please have your students practice changing from school clothes to swim wear and back. Students are expected to bring their swim gear, towel, and goggles if they so desire. Please help remind your students to bring their swim apparel every day. We highly recommend packing a plastic bag for their wet suit. Brushes and hair ties are ideal for students with long hair. The pool does have swim gear available for anyone who forgets but in the past they did not lend out goggles so please plan accordingly.
Questions regarding swimming and the swim unit?
Please contact Mrs K at klappea@mcfsd.org
Thank you!
Health Services
Spring Allergies
April showers bring May flowers--and pollen! If your student suffers from Spring allergies, Health Services can help. We are happy to keep over-the-counter allergy medicines such as Zyrtec, Claritin or Allegra for your student to take during the school day. If this is something you're interested in doing, please fill out our over-the-counter medication consent form, sign the bottom and send it to your student's health office. Medications must be sent in the original container-please no pills in baggies, tupperware or other unlabeled containers. Each health office does keep oral Benadryl in stock, for those with life-threatening allergic reactions. It is not recommended to be used as a first-line treatment for seasonal allergies and careful consideration should be taken when administering Benadryl at school, given that it can result in drowsiness.
It can be difficult to determine whether red, itchy and watery eyes are a result of Spring allergies or are a result of a bacterial or viral infection that may need further evaluation. See below for a quick run-down of symptoms, treatment and the District's guidelines on exclusion from school for pink eye.
Bacterial pink eye: Symptoms include yellow or green colored, sticky discharge from the affected eye. Eyes are often very itchy and the eyelids may become swollen. You may notice your child's eyelids are crusted shut, especially in the morning. This must be treated with antibiotic ointment or eye drops and will then typically clear within 5-7 days.
Viral pink eye: Discharge is normally watery but may be sticky and yellow in the morning. Eyelids can become very swollen. Symptoms typically follow a recent cold or sore throat. Antibiotic ointments or eye drops will not help with viral pink eye. Eye wash solutions such as Artificial Tears can help relieve symptoms. Contact your Provider if symptoms do not improve within 7-14 days.
MSD's Health Services Department follows the DHS Wisconsin Childhood Communicable Disease guidelines for exclusion practices from school. For the majority of pink eye cases, students do not have to be excluded from school. Circumstances that would result in your student being excluded from school include fever or if the student is unable to refrain from touching their affected eye. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stephanie Peplinski, District Nurse, at peplins@mcfsd.org.
Parent/Guardian & Emergency Contact Information
Emergencies can happen at any time, so it is crucial that school staff, especially Health Services staff, are able to get in contact with a parent/guardian or an emergency contact during the school day. Please take a moment to review your students' listed emergency contacts in the IC parent portal to ensure the information listed is the most current. If there are special circumstances where you know you will not be available for calls during a specific time of day or if school staff should utilize an alternate phone number such as an office line, please ensure that this is communicated and/or make sure that your listed emergency contacts are aware of this, as health office staff may need to contact them if your student is seen in the health office and parent/guardian notification is required. To make changes to your emergency contacts please see here for steps to update contact information. Thank you for our partnership in helping to keep our students safe and healthy!
