Principal's Message
Near miss car accident.
Usually, I would start my main message with some positive things happening around our school, but today I would like to highlight the need for all of us to be extra vigilant about road safety outside of school.
Just over a week ago, we had a serious near miss outside the school that could have been a tragedy. Even though it is a 100 kph speed zone on Kokopu Road, we are asking everyone to lower their speed. Also, when pulling out of school, please make sure you take an extra second or two to double-check the road is clear. The safest place to park is on the school grounds and not along the roadside.
We are working hard to improve our car parking and to get the speed outside the school reduced. This week, we have been in contact with NZTA, WDC, and MOE to ask for an urgent change of speed. It has been difficult to get timely movement on this, but we are making progress. Please keep pressing this issue with WDC and NZTA if you have contacts. Also, if you have a near miss or see one, please let the school know.
The Good Stuff
At Kokopu School we have fantastic students who do some amazing things as can be seen further down in our newsletter today. But, we also have some very talented and knowledgeable staff.
Last week, Room 4 hosted the principal and a teacher from One Tree Point School who wanted to observe the Writer's Toolbox program in action. We are fortunate to have Jennifer Hibbert, who is an expert in the program. As part of her role, she spends two days a week supporting other rural schools with this program. We also had a similar visit from the principal of Fielding Intermediate a few weeks ago.
Last Thursday our junior teachers took a morning to test and moderate a new early literacy assessment they had created. The assessment is based on our structured literacy approach and shows the in-depth knowledge and expertise our staff have been developing over the last 3-4 years.
Last week, I had a very positive meeting with the Education Review Office (ERO). ERO is now using a partnership methodology rather than conducting a compliance check every three years. Our partnership goals are closely aligned with our strategic plan, particularly in the area of structured literacy and assessment. The ERO representative was very impressed with our progress and enjoyed visiting the classrooms and seeing the students working hard. Due to the positive direction the school is heading, ERO won't be back for a while, but we will continue to work through our goals, and a final report will be written in the middle of next year.
