Weeks 12-13(11/11 - 11/22)

What's Going on at Deal?
Virtual High School Night is This Thursday (11/21) @ 6:30 PM
Community Project Starts this week!
As an IB MYP school, each 8th grader is required to complete a community service project called the Community Project. This project will take place in advisory from November 19-February 27th. For this project, students will identify one of their communities, an issue within their community, then plan and take action to impact that issue. Students will then present their project at the end of February. Students will attend an 8th grade assembly introducing the project on November 19th during advisory. Be sure to ask your students about this exciting capstone!
Do not hesitate to contact your students' advisory teacher, or Ms. Daniels (IB Coordinator), Caitlin.Daniels@k12.dc.gov, with questions.
World Language Trip Updates
For our trips to Costa Rica and France, we are still working to receive final approval and will share registration information as soon as we are able. Please note: the registration deadline will approach quickly, so families will need to move quickly to sign up for the trip and submit all forms.
The number one thing families can do to prepare for this trip is ensure their student has a current passport (valid through November of 2025). If your student does not yet have a passport, we strongly recommend your family move quickly to obtain one.
High School Recommendation Requests
All students requesting a recommendation for high school must complete the following steps:
1. Have a personal conversation with your teacher to request a recommendation.
2. Complete the recommendation request form (linked below by team).
3. Share your teachers' email on the school's application site.
4. Send the teacher an email to let them know you completed the form and thank them for their time.
As Deal teachers receive many recommendation requests, all requests should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the application school's deadline and will be completed in the order they are received. Recommendations are completed at the discretion of the teacher. Students are responsible for maintaining positive relationships with their teacher and meeting high academic expectations.
While completing this form, students are required to submit complete, thoughtful responses that reflect the time and energy they expect from their recommending teacher. Incomplete or insufficient responses may result in the teacher not submitting a recommendation.
Recommendation Request Links:
If your student needs a recommendation from a teacher not on these form (including 7th grade teachers), please email that teacher directly.

Mr. Haller - Woolloomooloo Team Lead – Math/ELA
Hello Woolloomooloo Families!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Our team breakfast celebration could not have been a success without the help of our parents/guardians. We had so many good snacks/breakfast treats for everyone (and whoever brought "Call Your Mother Bagels", they were amazing!); it was a great way to celebrate the end of Advisory 1. It's truly one of my favorite times to have with our 8th graders, and I know that they too appreciate the celebration/food as well.
Parents, we are asking that students keep their electronics (iPads, headphones, apple watch, etc.) at home or with their Yondr pouch. Unfortunately, throughout the year these will often get misplaced, broken, and even stolen in some cases so we are asking that parents have these conversations about keeping electronics locked in their Yondr pouch or keep them at home. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hello everyone!
This week, students worked on their multi-genre response on the American dream. Students were to pick a genre of their choice to create a response that shows their understanding of the American dream from texts we used in the unit. They got really creative! Students were also asked to explain in writing how their piece showed the American dream. Ask about what they did if you get the chance.
- This assignment was due on Friday, November 15th
- It can be found on Canvas in Multi-Genre Response: Talking About the American Dream
Next week, we will be taking a look at some texts that that will be themes for Unit 2: Community and Connections. Students will be working on annotating and understanding informational texts.
***We will begin reading our next book, 145th Street, in about a month. If you haven't already purchased it. It would be great if you could so the student can have their own copy for in book annotations and assignments for homework. If you are able to buy more than one copy, we'd appreciate to have extra copies for other students.***
Have a great weekend!
