To inspire students to live faith filled lives
and to be, like St. John the Baptist,
heralds of God's love in the world
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK...
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am including as this week’s newsletter piece my welcome letter for our upcoming gala event, The St. John’s School Spectacular. As parents, you continue to be the primary supporters of our school. I appreciate your ongoing support, and it is my deep hope and prayer that this event will enable us to continue to provide the very best Catholic education possible.

Dear parents, friends and benefactors of St. John the Baptist School,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our very first St. John’s School Spectacular: Reach for the Stars. Many hours of planning, many enthusiastic volunteers and an amazing response of generosity from our friends and benefactors have led us to this night. We are excited to share it with you.
St. John the Baptist School has been providing a Catholic education to students for 173 years, three centuries. This school has been a powerful instrument of academic education, Catholic Faith formation and responsible citizenship for thousands of students and generations of graduates. I am quite sure that many of you who are here with us tonight are graduates of St. John the Baptist School and many of you also have children who are graduates.
As you know, Catholic education is incredibly valuable; it is also financially challenging to sustain. Your presence here tonight, and your willingness to contribute tonight is the beginning of a new way of supporting and sustaining our school. This event affords us the opportunity to begin to do what Catholic high schools and Catholic universities have been doing for years. That is to develop and maintain relationships with graduates, sponsors and benefactors in order to create a philanthropic base for the future.
We work continually with our three parishes, St. John the Baptist, St. John Neumann and Corpus Christi, to keep our tuition at an affordable level. We are fortunate to receive significant support from various sources in the State of Ohio as well. The days of Catholic schools run by unpaid religious women are gone. The days of bake sales and magazine sales have ceased to be viable. The future of Catholic schools is entrusted to all of us who have been blessed by it.
Your presence and support tonight will enable us to begin to do several critically important things. Through your support, we will be able to ensure that a Catholic education is affordable for every family who wants this for their children. It will provide us with funds to create additional educational opportunities for students and to continue to promote the safest environment possible. And when critically needed, we will be able to create a fund for students whose families experience some life impacting event, a death in the family, a serious illness, the loss of a job.
As I often say, it’s all a gift. God has gifted us; let us in return be the giver of the gift.
Thank you for your support of and generosity for St. John the Baptist School.

Guidelines for Childhood Illness and School Attendance
FEVER: If your child has a fever (a temperature of 100 degrees or greater) they should remain at home until they have been fever free for a full 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine and they have returned to their normal behavior. It is important to take your child's temperature before giving the fever-reducing medicine.
VOMITING AND/OR DIARRHEA: Your child should remain at home until they have been without any episodes of vomiting or diarrhea for a full 24 hours without anti vomiting/diarrhea medicine and have resumed a typical diet. If your child has had any of these symptoms during the night she/he should not be sent to school the following day.
COLD SYMPTOMS: Runny noses are a fact of life with children. However, if the drainage is thick and green or if your child has a persistent or productive cough please keep your child home and consider consulting with your pediatrician. A constant dry cough can be a sign of more serious respiratory problems.
SORE THROAT: If your child has a persistent or severe sore throat they should remain at home. You should consider contacting your pediatrician if there is fever, white patches on the tonsils, swollen tender glands, headache, or stomach ache. These symptoms could indicate possible strep infection. If that is the case, your child should remain at home until he/she has had 24 hours of antibiotics and has resumed typical activity/behavior.
EARACHE: If your child complains of ear pain they should remain at home until they can be evaluated by their doctor.

Edible Science Experiment
Included among these was an edible treat for our young scientists. Although it looks like they were making witches brew for Halloween, some half and half and vanilla mixed with liquid nitrogen cooled to 300 degrees below zero actually made delicious ice cream!
Check out our Facebook page to see another video in which eight balloons were put into a bowl of liquid nitrogen and then re-inflated when taken out.
