Reading is EVERYTHING
Reading is how our students acquire vocabulary and improve their fluency. Reading connects them to the world, it:
- allows students to "visit" places they otherwise wouldn't be able to, and learn about other cultures and ways of life.
- takes them back in time and allows them to learn how other generations lived, or about important events in history.
-can be a stress reliever.
-allows students to identify and connect with story characters and their character traits.
-should be a lifelong hobby.
How to support your student' reading:
-Encourage them to check out books from the Media Center at Teasley or their local library.
-Join them in action by finding reading materials you enjoy. Let them see you reading.
-Talk about what they are reading. Ask them questions about the story, the setting or the characters.
-Ask them to share specific details about what they are reading and what evidence supports the details - for example, how old the character is, or what US state the story takes place.
-Keep reading materials handy - in the car, in their rooms, in the kitchen, etc.
-Encourage them to read books from various genres (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, drama, etc.)
-Let them read different types of prints - books, magazines, comic books, instruction manuals, etc.
-Give audio books a try! This is a great resource for students that learn best by listening and speaking.
