President Christina Vera's Letter to the Community
Dear Columbus City Schools Community,
I want to personally extend my heartfelt gratitude for your patience, dedication, and unwavering support as we navigate the challenging process of school closures and consolidations to better align and strengthen our school communities.
After extensive and thoughtful discussions about the future of our school facilities, the Board of Education has made the important decision to approve several of the school building closure and consolidation recommendations presented by the Superintendent’s Community Facilities Task Force. This means that five schools will close or consolidate, with implementation set to begin as early as the 2026-2027 school year.
The schools affected by this decision include:
- Broadleigh Elementary School
- Buckeye Middle School
- Columbus Alternative High School
- Moler Elementary School
- West Broad Elementary School
This decision was not made lightly, and we deeply understand that schools are much more than buildings. They are vibrant communities where students grow, friendships are formed, and futures take shape. They are spaces filled with memories, opportunities, and the potential for so much more. Recognizing this, we approached this decision with a commitment to safeguarding our students’ educational experiences while ensuring the district’s sustainability and equity.
The Board’s policy on school closures takes into account various factors, including enrollment trends, program effectiveness, building capacity, safety and accessibility, and the age and condition of facilities. Currently, our district faces challenges with under and over-enrolled schools, aging infrastructure, and facilities that are beyond cost-effective maintenance. These issues impact our ability to provide consistent and robust educational support services to every student in the district.
We are incredibly grateful for the input and feedback shared by staff, students, families, and community members throughout this process. Your voices were essential in helping the Board reevaluate and refine the recommendations from the Task Force, reducing the scope of the closures and consolidations originally proposed.
In the coming weeks, there will be ongoing opportunities for community feedback as we move forward. Starting in January, updates from the Superintendent and her team will be shared at least once a month during the second Board of Education meeting, ensuring transparency and continued engagement throughout this process. Additionally, Dr. Chapman will establish a dedicated transition team to support students, families, and staff as they prepare to transition into new school communities.
We fully recognize the emotional weight of this decision and the impact it has on everyone involved. Please know that we are committed to approaching every step of this process with sensitivity, compassion, and respect for the students, families, and educators who make Columbus City Schools exceptional. Our focus remains steadfast on creating safe, supportive, and thriving school environments where all students can reach their full potential.
As we move forward together, let us remain united in our shared commitment to building a brighter future for current and future generations of Columbus City Schools students.
With gratitude,
Christina Vera

When Winter Weather Forces Classes to be Canceled, You Need to Know Right Away
Winter weather is here, and Columbus City Schools is ready to help you plan ahead should the District be forced to cancel classes due to inclement weather.
Our goal is to announce a school cancellation as soon as we can. We are constantly monitoring weather forecasts and road conditions and will make an announcement the night before whenever possible. If weather conditions are such that a determination the night before is not possible, the Superintendent and her Operations team will make a decision no later than 5:30 a.m. Once the decision to close or cancel has been made, the next step is to alert parents, teachers, and staff.
STAY CONNECTED: news about cancellations of classes or the cancellation of extracurricular activities, field trips, and/or student-athletic events due to inclement weather are shared in several ways.
- Make sure the contact information on file at your child’s school is accurate. If you need to update this information, contact the main office in your child’s school or update online in the Parent Portal. (This includes emergency contacts, phone numbers, and email addresses).
- All families and staff will be alerted through an automated call, email, and text message from the District’s phone system. It is important to have your updated contact information on file in order to receive this notification.
- Follow Columbus City Schools on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or check our website. As soon as the decision is made to cancel school, we’ll share news and other schedule updates on the District website and on our social media pages.
- Monitor the news on local television and radio stations.
Extracurricular Activities, in the event of class cancellations or early dismissal due to inclement weather:
- Cancellation of School Day - Generally, evening activities, events, and athletic practices are canceled when classes are canceled for the day; however, there are occasions when an event might occur even when schools have been closed. Please monitor the District’s website and social media outlets for special instructions (ccsoh.us).
- Early Dismissal Due to Inclement Weather - Early dismissal for inclement weather will automatically cancel all after-school activities.
HAVE A BACKUP PLAN: When inclement weather impacts the morning commute, the Superintendent plans to determine whether to cancel classes as early as possible. This may be the night before or no later than 5:30 a.m. the next morning if possible. If bad weather is forecast for the afternoon, classes may be dismissed as early as noon. Have an alternative plan for your child’s day already set.
- Supervision: is your child responsible enough to be home alone, or do they need someone to stay with?
- Healthy Food: is there nutritious food available for your child to eat for breakfast and lunch?
- Safe Location: if classes are dismissed early, does your child go home or to another location? If your child is under the age of 8, will there be someone to meet them at the bus stop?
- Engaging Activities: what safe activities do you have for your child to do if they are at home for an unexpected amount of time?

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program provides housing assistance for very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled, allowing them to live in safe, quality affordable housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses or apartments in neighborhoods of their choice. Participants are free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and are not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.
A family that is issued a voucher is responsible for finding a suitable unit where the owner agrees to rent under the HCV program. The suitable unit may even include the family's present residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety, as determined by the PHA.
A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by CMHA on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.

Parent Engagement Opportunity's in Schools
Parental involvement during the elementary years is vital in helping children attain academic success. Parent involvement tends to peak while the children are in the elementary school. The research also shows that the earlier parental involvement begins in a child's educational process, the more powerful the effects will be. Educators frequently point out the critical role of the home and family environment in determining a child's school success. It appears that the earlier this influence is instilled, the greater the likelihood of higher student achievement. There appears to be a relationship between the age of the child and the forms of parental involvement. Greater efforts to involve parents are seen at the preschool and primary levels. Efforts here focus on assisting in the classroom and reading to children at home.
Parental involvement at the elementary level requires work, dedication, and commitment from all parties involved. While some parents of grade-school level students may feel that "involvement" stops at bringing the children to and from school, those parents who immerse themselves in their child's education know that they must go much further. At the elementary level, using learning activities in the home helps promote academic skills. Students at this age level need the constant reinforcement of rudimentary skills to promote higher learning. Although children spend the bulk of their day at school learning to read and conceptualizing their thoughts with their teacher, learning should go beyond the classroom.
Knowing that parent involvement is vital to student success, Northgate Intermediate works with a school ’s Family Ambassador (formally known as Parent Consultant) in the building to improve parent involvement. The Family Ambassador’s main goals are to work collaboratively with other parents, principal, counselor and staff to develop parent engagement activities as well as being a liaison for you (the parent) to communicate strategies and ideas to improve the overall climate of the school. Ms. Skipper (Northgate’s Family Ambassador) is at the building Tuesday-Thursday and can be reached at 614-365-8815 if you have ideas, questions or concerns.
