Middleton Update
December 19, 2024
Dear Middleton Families,
One more day of school in 2024! The Middleton staff wishes all of our MIddleton families an enjoyable, restful Winter Break!
Nutrition Services: Negative Balance Alerts from ParentSquare
Starting in January 2025, families will begin receiving notifications through ParentSquare if their student’s lunch account has a negative balance.
We encourage all families to check your student's school lunch account balance and address any outstanding negative balances before the new year. To pay your balance with a credit/debit card or eCheck/ACH, please visit the ParentVUE website. Instructions for navigating the ParentVUE website can be found here. Cash or check payments will be processed by the Nutrition Services Staff in the cafeteria.
Free Community Event - Parenting in a Digital World
Sherwood Education Foundation is sponsoring a free community event on January 15th from 5pm to 8pm in the Sherwood High School Auditorium. Speaker Tanner Clark is a TEDx and international speaker who has a passion for helping teenagers live their best life and empower them to use their "one second of strength." He has been a guest on the news, podcasts and is the host of The Second of Strength Podcast. Tanner uses social media for good to teach teens and parents about digital dangers and to help them overcome distractions so they can live up to their potential and find happiness.
Registration is required and space is limited. Register at http://TannerClark.eventbrite.com
December Highlights
Choir Performances
This month, our 4th and 5th grade choir, led by our music teacher, Hannah Schacht, had two performances, one at the Sherwood Tree Lighting Ceremony, and another at Middleton just last week. They will finish off their performances by performing for the whole school to start our Sing Along Assembly at the end-of-the day tomorrow.
Toy and Gift Drive
Staff Treats
Rwanda Assembly
In early December, our 5th graders had the opportunity to learn about another culture. From someone who lives in Rwanda, students learned what life is like for a child of a similar age in rural Rwanda, including what school is like, what foods they eat, what their homes are made of, how they get their water, what sorts of chores kids have and toys they play with.

Crosswalk Safety
We've had quite a few "near misses" this month in our crosswalks. As the weather gets cold and wet, the number of cars in and out of the lot in the morning increases. In addition to that, some mornings are still quite dark at 7:45 am. Here are a few safety reminders for our crosswalks:
- Please come to a full stop at stop signs (unless I am motioning traffic through).
- Please accelerate slowly through intersections. A slow-moving car can stop quickly if needed.
- If a crossing-guard is in the crosswalk (even if there are no students), cars cannot pass through the crosswalk. Please wait until even our adults are fully out of the street to pass through.
- Please be aware of students crossing the street in the surrounding neighborhoods, not just at the intersections where crossing guards are posted. One of our "close calls" this week was in a nearby neighborhood, not a school crosswalk.
- Please remind your children they should never cross Sunset without a crossing guard. I'm going to begin sending our crossing guards down a few minutes earlier, at 7:35. If your child arrives there before 7:35, we would like them to wait for the crossing guards to arrive.
- U-turns are not allowed in the intersection in front of the school.
Keep in mind that drop-off and pick-up will always take some time. While we are trying to be efficient, it will never be fast. Additionally, if you are in a hurry and would like to get through quickly, it's much quicker between 7:30 and 7:45. Traffic increases significantly between 7:45 and 7:55, especially on cold or wet days. THANK YOU for your help in keeping our kids (and adults!) SAFE.
