Tickets will be 2/$1 the night of the carnival. Purchase your tickets on November 14 and then stop by the Will Call Booth the night of the carnival to pick up your pre-sale ticket envelope. No refunds.
Friday, November 22: Community Carnival 4-7 p.m.
The 13th Annual NYM Community Carnival will be held on Friday, November 22nd from 4-7 p.m. at the New York Mills School. This Parent Nest event features 20 games, 2 inflatables, a balloon twister, caricature drawings, phenomenal prize table, and one of the community’s best silent auctions of the year.
"We are excited about the upcoming 13th annual NYM Carnival," said Katie Geiser. "Last year's carnival raised approximately $14,000 to donate back to elementary classrooms, high school student council, high school teams & clubs, new Eagle shirts to all incoming Kindergarteners, and an author/speaker visit to the elementary. At this year's carnival, we are raising money for both the elementary and high school. There are also new prizes and new silent auction items. Be sure to come check it all out on Friday, November 22nd from 4-7 p.m. We hope to see you at the Carnival!"
Games
The Carnival doors open at 4 p.m. and close at 7 p.m. Children of all ages (and adults too!) can play any of the 20 games or the 2 inflatables for the price of a few tickets. Besides game booths, plan to check out Clueless--The Balloon Twister & Friends. She will be twisting balloons into amazing characters, so make sure to stop by her booth and pick up your very own balloon friend. New this year is caricature drawings. We have a local artist ready to draw you and your friends. Each game booth "costs" a certain amount of tickets. Tickets can be purchased the night of the carnival for 2 tickets/$1. We are also excited to offer Pre-Sale Tickets during Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 14 in the commons area at a 50% discount of 4 tickets/$1. Purchase your tickets on November 14 and then stop by the Will Call Booth the night of the carnival to pick up your pre-sale ticket envelope. (no refunds on pre-sale tickets)
Similar to an arcade, “winners” at the game booths earn prize “tokens” (we use punch cards), which can be spent at the prize table. The prize table will include a wide variety of exciting prizes that “cost” a certain amount of “tokens.” This way, children can choose the prizes they want to take home.
Silent Auction
Circling the Silent Auction tables will be a great way to spend the evening. The auction starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6:45 p.m.
New this year, each elementary and high school classroom brought in monetary donations that were used to collaborate with local businesses to create silent auction baskets. This year, some of our favorite themed baskets are “Unplugged”, “Bouquets for the Holidays”, “Eagle Game Day” and “Cheese Lovers”. The silent auction committee is striving to create new, unique ideas for the silent auction baskets so there is something for everyone.
“Our goal this year was to support and collaborate with local businesses, as they are the foundation of our small towns. We’re hoping with this new change, we’re able to uplift the community we live in and reinforce shopping local.” said Kelsey Hammer
Besides the classroom baskets, the silent auction includes donations from area businesses. Make sure to check it out!
The online silent auction is also getting a revamp this year. Our online silent auction will open roughly two weeks prior to the day of the carnival and include a variety of five items. To give a taste of what these items are, bidders will have the chance to win a 3 Day Saskatchewan, Canada Waterfowl Hunting Experience which was generously donated by a New York Mills alumni. Or throw the first pitch at the annual Millers vs Braves July 3rd game–something that has never been done before!
Raffle
Get ready to take a chance at winning at our new raffle table. This will consist of five larger raffle packages, including a Blackstone Grill package and Gift Card Board. Tickets will cost $5.00 each or 5/$20.00, one person will randomly be drawn for each raffle package.
Food
Come hungry and enjoy supper served by the NYM Close Up!

Satchel Pulse
New York Mills Elementary continues to utilize Satchel Pulse to help monitor and improve the social-emotional learning (SEL) and well-being of students.
This is our third year using Satchel Pulse in the elementary school. Screening is completed in the fall, winter and spring. After the fall and winter screenings, small groups, if needed, are formed with Mrs. Radniecki. Fall groups are starting soon and meet once a week for six weeks. These groups provide an opportunity to focus on enhancing and building SEL skills.
What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social-emotional learning is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to
Develop healthy identities
Problem-solve effectively
Manage emotions
Achieve personal and collective goals
Demonstrate respect and responsibility
Feel and show empathy for others
Establish and maintain supportive relationships
Make responsible and caring decisions.
Studies show that SEL programs increase academic performance, attendance, behavior, and post-secondary success.
How will the NY Mills School District utilize Satchel Pulse?
Students in grades 2-6 are given a screener for students to self-analyze their skills in the following five areas: (1) self-awareness, (2) self-management, (3) social awareness, (4) relationship skills, and (5) responsible decision-making skills. Elementary teachers (K-6) will also complete a screener for each of their students.
After the screeners are completed, the Satchel Pulse program will analyze the data and provide the student support team with SEL interventions. The student support team will then meet with students to work on SEL-specific goals. Our Elementary Student Support Team includes Kristin Draeger, Julie Radniecki, and Katherine Dittmann. The program also provides classroom lessons that can be used by teachers for all students.
Please note that the Satchel Pulse SEL screener is NOT a mental health screener. It is NOT designed to identify disorders requiring support from a mental health professional.
Parental Supervision Necessary at NYM Events
Lack of parental supervision of children at school events (both inside and out) has become a serious problem this fall. While we love to see students of all ages at the games cheering for our Eagles, we have had reports of large groups of unattended children causing problems, both in the school and at the football field. There have been reports of fights, unruliness, and disrespect. As a result, our adult volunteers who supervise games and our after hours custodial staff are being overtaxed with the added duties of chasing children out of places where they should not be after school hours which has become a major safety issue for staff, students and parents alike. We would love to continue seeing the turnouts and school spirit that we do at sporting events and have full confidence that these issues will be easily resolved if children remain with their parents during events. Thank you so much for your continued support! We have always been able to count on our amazing community and we know that the safety of our children is your number one priority as well as ours! Have fun, be safe and Go Eagles!
