St Luke's Catholic Primary
NEWSLETTER | 12TH SEPTEMBER 2024
Message From The Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
This term has been incredibly busy, with many opportunities and activities for all to participate in and this has kept our school a vibrant and engaging learning space. From the significant celebration of the Sacrament of Eucharist to our Year 6 camp, each event has contributed to the growth and development of our students. The recent Carnivals, Tournament of Minds, School Disco and TSH Power of Speech highlighted, the strong sense of community which makes St Luke’s such a special place to be. Our Years 3 & 5 dance students showcased their incredible talents and hard work at the annual Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival. These performances entertained, built confidence and fostered a love for the Arts.
We also celebrated Father's Day, a special occasion where we honoured the important role fathers and father figures play in the lives of our students. It was a reminder of the incredibly strong support network that surrounds our children. All these events could not happen without the support of families, so thank you to everyone who has given of their time. You are appreciated. We look forward to the final Speak Up Awards which will take place tomorrow morning. Don’t forget next Friday is our Dress as a Pirate Day, your gold coin donation will be donated to LifeLink. Thank you to all the staff who have given so much of their time and energy to ensure everyone feels safe and ready to learn.
I will be on leave in Week 10 attending the Trans- Tasman’s Principals’ Conference in Christchurch, New Zealand. As we head towards the holidays, we hope you and your family enjoy a well-deserved break. Stay safe and take this time to relax and recharge. Pope Francis says during holidays, ‘let us learn how to take a break, turn off the mobile phone to gaze into the eyes of others, cultivate silence, contemplate nature and regenerate ourselves in dialogue with God.’
We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the new term on Tuesday 8th October, ready for more opportunities to learn and grow.
Kind regards
Kerry Hewitson

Technology and Parental Controls
The internet and technology have transformed the ways we learn, work, create, play, connect and are entertained. It’s given our children access to the world, but it has also given the world access to our children. Children gain immense benefits from being online, but there are also risks. The internet and digital environments, including emerging environments, were not and are not designed for children or with children’s safety in mind.
Parental control tools can play a role in creating safer digital environments and experiences for children. They allow parents to set boundaries and monitor online activities, promoting responsible and age-appropriate use of technology.
While parental controls are valuable tools for managing and guiding a child's digital experience, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Parental controls can help mitigate certain risks and provide a level of supervision, but they are most effective when used in conjunction with parental supervision, education, conversation and participation.
Parental control tools can assist to monitor, restrict, limit and filter what children do and see online. They offer a range of customisations and restrictions. These tools allow parents to tailor the controls to their child's specific needs and gradually increase independence as the child matures. Some of the common features are:
Content Filtering
Screen Time Management
App and Game Restriction
Privacy Controls
Location Tracking
Communication Controls
Age-Based Restrictions
Parental controls can be categorised into a range of types. Each type offers a different focus and degree of control, allowing parents to customise their approach based on the specific needs of their children.

Telethon Speech & Hearing- Power of Speech
On Saturday the 7th of September, twelve TSH students from St Luke’s participated in the annual TSH Power of Speech, public speaking event. This year, we had a record number of students participating. Thank you to the St Luke’s staff for supporting our students on this very exciting day. The students worked extremely hard to plan, draft, write and edit their speeches before presenting on Saturday.
Congratulations to the twelve students from St Luke’s who delivered their speeches, along with students from other TSH supported schools around Perth. A special congratulations to Mia Sheppard, who won the Most Improved Award. It was a wonderful day, and all of our students should be extremely proud of themselves.

Year 3 - Disco. An absolute ball was had by everyone who attended.
Year 2 - Book Fair. A great success!

Congratulations Sinclair (Year 3) on his recent football achievements. He has been playing in several tournaments for two different age groups. In the U9 Sorrento Cup Sinclair's team reached the finals but unfortunately lost 3-4 in a penalty shootout. This team also won the recent Perth Redstar Cup with an unbeaten streak all weekend. In the U8 Sorrento Cup, representing his Academy DMFA, the team reached the finals unbeaten, ultimately winning 4-3 by penalty shootout.
Sinclair will travel to Sydney in October for an international competition, representing WA and his Academy DMFA. Good luck!

Youth Group Report
At 24:7 Woodvale last week, to kick off the evening, we had some free time for everyone to relax and connect. After that, we played three games, these games were not just enjoyable but also served as great icebreakers and team-building exercises.
Following the games, we entered a reflective time where the youth were encouraged to consider their relationship with God, particularly focusing on their prayer life. They had the opportunity to write down their thoughts and prayers, or even recommit to the prayer practices they had committed to in the previous weeks. Once they were finished, they placed their papers in a basket at the foot of the cross, symbolising the act of giving these prayers and reflections to God. The session saw a good turnout with 26 young people in attendance.
