DCS Safety Protocols
District administrator's continue to work on our emergency plans and protocols for the District. I will be sharing updated ALICE emergency protocol posters and training details for ALICE procedures with latchkey staff during the upcoming PD training for latchkey staff and also during the District's early release day with preschool staff at Central/GSRP and Cardinal's Nest on December 11th. Please read the following update and watch the attached video clip regarding the District's upcoming changes in fire drill procedures. We will discuss details during these upcoming meetings.
Fire Drill Procedures
There has been lots of talk around school fire drill procedures and that a fire alarm may be pulled as a means of getting students out of classrooms for even more nefarious purpose. For this reason, I would like to introduce you to new fire drill procedures we will use:
Teachers will check the hallway first before students leave.
Teachers and students will leave the classroom door open (escape route).
Teachers will take attendance or headcount at a teacher determined spot outside.
See how west Michigan schools are changing the way they conduct fire drills as well. See the link below (short news video).

Behavior Referrals-BIR's and Keeping the Code!
The best defense for negative behavior is relationship building and positive behavior practices. Weather changes can bring an uptick in behavior, so please be proactive and front-load positive encouragement and reteaching the Cardinal Code, especially for your frequent flyers! Remember that you are the first responder for inappropriate behavior and should manage all minor behavior issues within your classroom and anywhere on school property. Only major referrals need to be written up and submitted to the office. Any minor referrals delivered to the office will be returned to teachers and latchkey staff to manage. I have attached a list of the major and minor behavior document below. All preschool staff have been using this document and it was introduced to latchkey site supervisors and program directors at our most recent meeting. They will be going over the document and sharing it with latchkey staff. They are also keeping a binder of BIR's at each latchkey site. These BIR's are sent to me for my review and signature and sent back to the latchkey site supervisor. This allows me to stay on top of the referrals and act on multiple BIR's from the same offender.
If you are a latchkey caregiver, and you have an emergency behavior situation please follow the protocol of informing your site supervisor/program director. If you are a teacher you can contact me, Lori, Peppin, or Head Teacher, Lindsey Tate in my absence at Central/GSRP. Notice that I did not mention contacting a secretary to manage behavior. Remember that it is NOT the secretarial staff at either Cardinal's Nest, GSRP or any school building's responsibility to manage behavior. Informing secretarial staff of the behavior issue for the purpose of seeking assistance from the appropriate staff is fine, but sending kids to sit in the office is not part of our behavior management model.
Please remember to be on the look out for Positive Behavior!! It is so important to acknowledge the students that are doing a great job following the Big and Little rules of the Cardinal Code! Let's keep our eyes peeled for students rising above the Cardinal Code and demonstrating outstanding behavior! A Cardinal Compliment card or positive phone call to parents goes a long way in reinforcing the positive and building positive relationships with our families!
Please take a minute to review the Minor and Major Behavior definitions defined by our District PBSC protocol for preschool and latchkey students.
