We did it! Thank you for the strength and optimism our students, families, staff, and community have put into these last two months of online learning. I'm grateful to all of our schools for organizing end of the year celebrations including parades, videos, and virtual announcements.
While we put this school year to a close, conversations are underway about this new normal we are all living. We will continue to work toward the best learning experience for our students for the 2020-21 school year. As plans evolve, we will continue to keep you updated.
Happy summer,
Dr. Michele Condon
Superintendent of Schools
Prop S: Election June 2
The number of polling places for the June 2 has decreased. This could possibly cause your polling location to change. Before heading to the polls on Tuesday, June 2, please be sure to check the online St. Louis County Polling Place and Sample Ballot Lookup website.
The ballot includes Prop S and the three Directors for the KSD Board of Education. Prop S is a no-tax-rate increase bond measure. In fact, most will pay less. It is a common practice for schools to address major school facility needs by restructuring bonds. Every school district in St. Louis County has a debt service levy, except for one school district. While we can't be with our students now, one day we will all be back together. Please take the time to find out the facts about Prop S at www.kirkwoodschools.org/props. Please visit our YouTube channel with a video that provides an overview on how Prop S benefits our schools and students.
We have several upcoming Power Hours scheduled to answer your questions. Hop on for a few minutes or stay the whole hour.
Please also follow KSD on facebook and twitter (@kwoodschools) for daily information leading up to the election.
KSD Art Project Visual Celebration
Thank you to our families who submitted photos for our KSD Art Project Visual Celebration. We want to acknowledge the strength and optimism our students, families, staff, and community have put into these last two months of online learning. Please enjoy our video which showcases student learning, and celebrates those who've supported our students' efforts.
Summer School Information
We know many families are thinking toward summer and wondering what next year may look like in schools. We also know many camps are closed, leaving families looking for safe options to keep children engaged over the summer months. In response to these changing needs and concerns, we have expanded summer programming to offer ALL students the option to engage in high quality online learning.
There are three programming options for summer, each taking advantage of district-issued technology.
- Kirkwood will offer limited options at the elementary, middle, and high school level, providing identified students with targeted supports.
- Extended School Year will be offered virtually to qualifying students through Special School District
- New this year: All Kirkwood students can also enroll in enrichment, extension, and/or credit enhancement courses for their rising grade level through LAUNCH, a virtual course access provider based in Springfield Public Schools. We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students, at no cost to families or our district.
You will be notified by your school if your child qualifies for Kirkwood or SSD programming. We encourage all families to review summer school information on our website at http://kirkwoodschools.org/summerschool2020.
Families interested in LAUNCH can find information on our website and on the LAUNCH website. Please note that families interested in LAUNCH programming will register directly with Springfield Public Schools at http://sps.org/explore. To assist you during enrollment, we have created a tutorial to walk you through each step of the process. If you are unable to find your planned course on the enrollment page, once you have your SPS Student ID, please email Jessica at enroll@fueledbylaunch.com and she will add your child into the system for you.
Kindergarten Registration
Enrollment continues to grow in the Kirkwood School District, which is why it is important to register early for all grades. Enrolling early allows time for schools to plan class schedules and placement of classrooms to maintain desired class size guidelines. Children need to be 5 years old by August 1, 2020, to attend kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year.
Please review our Student Registration Checklist on the website for important documents prior to starting the online enrollment process. If you have questions, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page.
Summer Support for Meals
***Starting on Wednesday, May 27, Grab & Go summer meals will switch to Monday and Wednesday pickups, from 11a-1p at Nipher. The following Monday, June 1, will be the next pick up, and then again Wednesday, June 3. This will continue on this Monday & Wednesday pick up schedule until school starts in the fall. Two days of meals will be in the Monday pick up. Three days of meals will be in the Wednesday pick up.
In addition to our Grab & Go program, our KSD Nutrition on the Weekends (NOW) program is expanding this summer to support families in need with weekend meal support. KSD NOW Response to Summer Support will provide families with a box of food once a month:
Wednesday, June 3
Wednesday, July 8
Wednesday, August 5.
The box of food will be delivered to their home on these dates. Someone will be in touch with families on estimated arrival time on those dates. Families will also receive information on how to apply for KSD NOW for the upcoming 20-21 school year.
Please reach out to your school principal, school counselor, social worker, or classroom teacher or go to the website kirkwoodschools.org/cares to sign up. This is supported financially by donations from KSD NOW.
If you are a family who needs any type of summer food support, please fill out kirkwoodschools.org/cares.
